When we take time to make ourselves look good, we should not feel guilty of being vain. Certainly, we shouldn’t get carried away with investing in our appearances, and turn that into an obsession.
I think if Muslims and Christians learn more about the common threads in their faith traditions - in particular by getting to know each other in person, with open minds and without judgement, they can improve their relationships.
It’s with this in mind that Ash Wednesday might seem paradoxical and contradictory, too. For right after we hear a Gospel telling us not to do anything outward for others to see… we have ashes smeared all over our foreheads.
How’s that for irony?
I think it's fair to say, we as a culture have lost sight of the purpose of dating, which in turn can make dating really confusing.
So why fast from social media? For the same reasons above: you might be a bit too attached to it and fasting from it will help you learn and practice the reality that God alone is enough.
Whether it was through a Remind text or parent newsletter, high school students across the country have found out their proms and graduations are canceled. If you’re reading this, you’re probably in the same boat.
As we move through Holy Week in a way the Church never has before and might never again, I pray that our hope will rest in God alone. If we hope only in the goodness of situations or the favorable outcomes that might befall us, I think we’ll always be disappointed. But if we hope in God and His infinite goodness, we will never be let down.
I have learned that the experience is made all the more special if I really begin preparing for Christmas during the season of Advent. After all, that’s what Advent is all about!
