Color My World

An Edge Social Night

About this Edge Night

This night is designed to kickoff an Edge semester with a fun social night. The youth will begin with a fun scavenger hunt and then have time to get pumped up for the semester and the upcoming topic and theme. The night will end with some fun and messy color games.

Send out flyers, bulletin announcements, and invites to the kickoff. It is important to promote the event so youth know they will be getting dirty and what they need to wear (light colored T-Shirts, but make sure that they are not see through). You will need to purchase colored powder or you can make your own (this takes some time so please plan accordingly). Check with your boss/parish about an appropriate place to toss the powder and reserve that field or space. Hide all the M&M’s and Skittles both around the room and outside before the night begins.

Goal of This Night

The goal of this Edge Night is to help the youth grow in fellowship and community. This night is intended to be a kick off for the Edge semester.

Inside and Out

An Edge Issue Night on Modesty

About this Edge Night

This Edge Night will begin with a modest fashion show where the youth will get an opportunity to show off their best modest outfit made out of donated clothes or newspaper. Then there will be a talk that emphasizes the importance of modesty in clothing, speech, and on social media. The youth will then have a chance to discuss in gender specific small groups the things that are the most challenging when it comes to modesty. They will also be given the opportunity to come up with a skit of real life scenarios where they encourage a friend to be modest. The Edge Night will end with a time for the girls and guys to pray over each other for an increase in strength to live out modesty in their daily lives.

Goal of This Night

The goal of this Edge Night is to introduce the concept of modesty as a lived virtue rather than just how to dress.  The night will allow the youth to identify how culture affects their ideas of modesty, and present ways to understand their dignity as men and women of modesty and temperance.

An Edge Issue Night on Thanksgiving

About this Edge Night

This Edge Night begins with some fun Thanksgiving themed games, and it transitions into a teaching about learning to be truly thankful this time of year. During the Break, the youth will have an opportunity to make a cut out of what they are thankful for to display in their house, and they will also have a chance for small group discussion. The night will end with a Thanksgiving Prayer.

Goal of This Night

The goal of this Edge Night is to make the youth more aware of the blessings they have in their lives. Particularly at the time of Thanksgiving we should reflect on what God has given us.  Youth will also be reminded that the Eucharist, which in Greek means thanksgiving, is the greatest prayer of thanksgiving we could ever participate in.

Special Note: If you are a parish outside of the United States, adapt this night to follow your country’s traditions and customs of a similar holiday. You can also modify the night to just teach and encourage the youth to be more thankful.

An Edge Night on Esther

About this Edge Night

The Edge Night will begin with a fun large group game for the Gather. The Proclaim focuses on the story of Esther and the virtues she exemplified, which we are all called to imitate. During the Break, the youth will get a chance to discuss the story of Esther and the lessons learned from it and will also have an opportunity to do a Book of Esther scavenger hunt. The night will end with a music video that exemplifies turning to Christ in all things and a prayer for courage.

Goal of This Night

The goal of this Edge Night is to bring to life the story of Esther, one of the more prominent female characters of the Old Testament. This night will highlight the virtues of Esther and how we are all called to imitate those virtues in our own faith.

Who’s Your King?

An Edge Night On David

About this Edge Night

This Edge Night will help the youth to see how the story of the life of David provides us with great example of courage and repentance. The Gather starts off the night with a game of giant four square. The Proclaim follows the life of David, highlighting the stories of his heroism and continual desire to search after God’s own heart, and how youth can draw inspiration for their own lives from David’s story. During the Break, the youth will split into their small groups to discuss the “Goliaths” they face in their lives. The Send consists of a time of Eucharistic Adoration where the youth will have an opportunity to pray in front of the King of Kings.

Goal of This Night

The goal of this Edge Night is to provide the middle school youth with a clear understanding of the story of King David. They will see how their heart is similar to a kingdom in which God is called to be king. They will also learn about two of the biggest obstacles we face in the Christian life: fear and sin.

The Buddy System

An Edge Night on Ruth

About this Edge Night

This Edge Night will help the youth learn the story of Ruth as a model of faith and godly friendship. It will also help them to reflect on the importance of having good fellowship and being a good friend to others. The Gather begins with a fun and fast-paced game showing that two is better than one. The Proclaim spends time sharing the story of Ruth and encouraging the young people to consider whether or not they honor God by being a good friend. The Break allows the youth a chance to take a “friendship quiz” to get them thinking about areas that they could improve as a friend, followed by a small group discussion. During the Send, the youth will be invited to participate in an affirmation activity designed to empower them to build up those around them. Finally, the night will close with them putting into practice what they learned about praying with and for their friends.

Goal of This Night

The goal of this Edge Night is to introduce the middle school youth to the biblical character of Ruth who was one of the significant women in salvation history and ancestress of David and most importantly, Jesus. The night will focus on Ruth’s obedience to God, specifically through faithful and selfless friendship.

An Edge Night on Moses

About this Edge Night

This Edge Night will help the youth to understand the importance of Moses in salvation history, specifically in the lives of the people of Israel. The Gather begins with a welcome from the youth minister and a short music video that will serve as an introduction to the night. The Proclaim discusses the life of Moses and should be told as the exciting story that it is. The Break allows the youth a time to play a game and serves to reinforce, in a fun way, the information presented in the Proclaim. The small group discussion will give them time to consider the story of Moses and the Israelites and make the connection to Jesus and the working of God in their own lives. During the Send, the youth will be challenged to take time in their daily lives to pray, learn to hear God’s voice, and recognize Him in their lives.

Goal of This Night

The goal of this Edge Night is to identify the importance of Moses in salvation history. From learning about the life of Moses, the youth will identify that God is all-powerful and can do great things. It does require we trust in Him, like Moses and the Israelites did. Their forty years in the desert teaches us that the path may not always be easy, but it will be worth it in the end.
