Love Knows No Bounds (Parent Night) The Mass and Sacrifice About this Parent Night This Parent Night begins with a brief group activity with the parents making choices to as to what items would be most valuable on a deserted island. The activity will help the parents begin thinking about how they have to make sacrifices for different things in different situations. The activity will lead into the teaching for session, which challenges the parents to understand Mass as a sacrifice. The teaching also shows the connection between Christ’s sacrifice on the cross and the Eucharist. After a time of group discussion, the Parent Night will lead into a time of Eucharistic Adoration and Veneration of the Cross. Goal of This Night The Goal of this Parent Night is to help the parents understand the connection between sacrifice and the Mass, particularly between Christ’s sacrifice on the cross and the Eucharist. Catechism # 1066 - 1067 # 1085 # 1323 - 1333 # 1373 - 1377 Scripture Genesis 4:2 -7 Genesis 14:18 -20 Exodus 12:1 -20 Matthew 26:26 -30 Luke 22:19 -20 Hebrews 6:20 Key Concepts Sacrifice is a necessary part of true worship; it offers our best to God and in return God gives himself to us. The desire to sacrifice and worship God is written on the human heart. The Eucharist is prefigured in the sacrifices of the Old Testament, most especially the Paschal sacrifice of the lamb. Jesus is the new Lamb of God, sacrificed for our sins so we can be free from the slavery of death. The Eucharist is the re-presentation of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross; when we receive the Eucharist and pray at Mass we participate in the Paschal Mystery.
