Beauty Has Saved the World An Issue Night on Art and Culture About this Life Night This Life Night begins with a fun game that combines pop culture with some healthy competitive energy. After several rounds of open mic or karaoke, teens gather in a coffee shop environment and hear the testimony of a “true” local artist (musician, painter, filmmaker, author, etc.). After a brief Q&A with the artist, teens will divide into small groups to discuss the role of art and media in their lives. Following small groups, everyone gathers in the church to end the Life Night with a time of Eucharistic Adoration. They are challenged to remember that Jesus is Author of all Beauty and the one who sends us out to live lives of radiant beauty and holiness. Goal of This Night This Life Night introduces teenagers to the transcendental nature of beauty according to the Church’s tradition. It helps them to appreciate all forms of art (sacred or otherwise) that predispose the soul to virtue. Catechism # 2500 - 2502 YouCat # 461 Scripture Isaiah 60:1 -5 Wisdom 8:2 Wisdom 13:3 Matthew 17:1 -7 Key Concepts From music and films to creative social media, art takes on many forms in our modern culture and has a significant effect on our individual souls and the culture at large. There is a difference between beautiful art that directs our gaze towards Heaven (even when that art is not particularly religious) and counterfeit art that makes it more difficult to live a life of virtue. Understanding this difference and supporting true artists around us can restore Catholic culture and evangelize our families, schools, and communities.
