Title: Youth Minister – Middle School (Confirmation)

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt – Hourly
Hours: Full-time – Sun – Thur. (Includes Wednesday & Sunday nights)
Supervisor: Director of Youth Ministries
Location: St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church 202 W. Kronkosky, Boerne, TX 78006

Position Purpose:
The Youth Minister – Middle (YM) is one of two YMs that report to the Director of Youth Ministries. The YM Middle School is the missionary arm of the Parish and is responsible for relationship evangelization to middle school students (6th – 8th grade). The YM – Middle School is also responsible for the Sacrament of Confirmation of all students in the 8th grade.

The goals are outlined in the USCCB’s document Renewing a Vision: A Framework for Catholic Youth Ministry.

Goal #1: To empower young people to live as disciples of Jesus Christ in our world today.
Goal #2: To draw young people to responsible participation in the life, mission and work of the Catholic faith community.
Goal #3: To foster the total personal and spiritual growth of each young person.
The YM is the individual who attends the many events in the Parish for the youth. At the same time, their supervisor, the Director of Youth Ministries, is responsible for the behind-the-scenes work, including most, if not all, of the office duties and paperwork. The expectation is that the Director of Youth Ministries will handle most of the development, organization, and day-to-day office management of the youth programs. In contrast, the youth minister is actively involved in the events and activities on and off campus.

Work Hours:
The work week is generally 40 hours per week on a year-round basis; however, the position requires willingness and flexibility in work hours when necessary to fulfill job responsibilities. The employee is subject to Personnel Policies and procedures prescribed for all personnel by the Archdiocese of San Antonio. While the work schedule will vary, the YM can expect to work Sunday – Thursday, including Wednesday and Sunday nights.

Essential Functions of the Youth Minister – Middle School

The YM will lead 6th – 8th graders in the formation over their middle school years in a dynamic, evolving curriculum and activities to build their relationship with Jesus Christ and the Church.

This would include understanding and participating in the Sacraments of the Church, including preparing and receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation in the 8th grade. In other words, be the evangelizer and grow the middle schoolers’ participation in youth activities and the Mass so that when they graduate to high school, they have solid catechetical knowledge and understanding of what it means to be baptized Catholic.

Some of the duties include:

• As part of a youth ministry team, review the vision and programming opportunities regularly to address the changing needs of youth and their families in accord with the parish mission and vision
• Prepare the 8th graders for the Sacrment of Confirmation.
• Develop relationships with the Middle School kids and their parent.
• Attend and lead the many programs targeted at middle school kids, including Edge Night on Wednesdays and other activities.
• Develop, create and attend events where the youth are, including developing and creating afterschool activities on and off campus. Such as:
o Sporting Events – football, basketball, baseball games etc.
o Lunch with Middle School kids on and off campus
o Local ecumenical events, ensuring Catholic participation and representation at Archdiocese events targeted toward middle school kids.
• Assist other ministries on campus, such as the following:
o Recruit volunteers to help oversee Middle School and 8th-grade confirmation activities.
o Recruit and train chaperones for teens to attend Archdiocesan events throughout the year.
• Be available to minister to youth and parents by listening, advising and referral.
• Help to encourage and integrate youth into the life of the Parish. This includes recruiting volunteers for Vacation Bible Study, Catholic Camp, and other parish-related events.
• Gather teen volunteers to help with Parish Activities, including the many family events like the pool party.
• Attend staff meetings to maintain effective communication and relationships with all staff members, especially the parish receptionist.
• Meet with other Faith Formation Staff regularly to help foster cohesiveness among all Faith Formation levels.
• Be relational with all parishioners.
• Attend local, diocesan, and national training, workshops, and conferences.
• Equip and support parents in fulfilling their role as primary educators of their children.
• Create and implement a hospitality plan for welcoming and retaining families.
• Expand role to assist with YM – High School to work with young adults and engage in activities beyond high school and college.
• Help plan, organize, lead and attend Vacation Bible School each year.

Education and Experience
• Experience in diocesan or parish/school ministry to youth.
• Leadership experience includes ministry in multicultural settings.
• Familiarity with the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry (NFCYM), Life Teen, and Steubenville Conferences.

Required/Essential Skills:
• Practicing Catholic in full communion with the Church.
• Strong interpersonal and communication ability, particularly speaking and presentation skills.
• Ability to relate to and cooperatively work with others and a team model.
• Demonstrated project management and time management skills.
• Operating knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel.
• Operating knowledge of social media.

Working Environment:
• This position will involve evening and weekend work.
• Some travel overnight is required
