DESCRIPTION

Middle School Youth Minister – Saint Mary, Hudson
PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:

  • Plan and implement 6th through 8th grade middle-school ministry programs (60%)
  • Assist with high school youth ministry, planning and implementing programs (40%)
  • Maintain strong support and connection to the parish.

Accountable to the Parochial Vicar in collaboration with the parish Youth Minister.

Status: Full-Time, Exempt

Hours: 35+ per week

MIDDLE SCHOOL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plan, implement, and oversee the parish Edge Program

Edge is a weekly catechetical and social gathering of 6th to 8th grade students that meets every Wednesday evening from 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm during the school year. Edge consists of large group teachings, small group discussions, and fun activities to foster middle students’ relationship with Christ and each other.

  • Plan and implement weekly Edge sessions, including teaching the large group instruction (approx. 120 students/week).
  • Create curriculum with help from various catechetical resources.
  • Recruit, train, and maintain adult and teen volunteers (40+ persons).
  • Send weekly newsletter to parents.
  • Conduct 4 to 6 Edge Summer Nights post Camp Celebrate at the parish.
  • Plan, implement, and oversee Camp Celebrate

Camp Celebrate is a weeklong resident camp for students going into their 6th through 8th grade year. It usually takes place from Saturday through Friday in late June, with a training weekend for leadership volunteers who are teens & young adults in early June. Camp Celebrate blends fun and faith with camp activities, classroom instruction, and daily Mass.

  • Establish method of planning/operating Camp Celebrate and training retreats with the support of directorial planning team throughout the year.
  • Create/facilitate registration and advertisement for Camp (130+ persons)
  • Recruit and interview high school counselors for camp (30+ total, up to 70 applicants)
  • Recruit Adult/young adult volunteers (35+ persons, up to 45 applicants)

HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH MINISTRY AND PARISH RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with planning and participate regularly at Life Teen events
  • Assist with setup/cleanup and technical support at Life Nights (Sundays 4 – 9:30 pm)
  • Occasionally assist with planning and participation at ACTS 2:42/Fireside Chats/Green Team & Retreat Team meetings (Tuesdays 7 – 9 pm).
  • Assist with planning and participation at Retreats, Confirmation events, and Fundraising Activities (Trees & Treasures Gala, Life Teen dinners, etc.).
  • Engage in relational ministry (making personal relationships to know teens and bring them to Christ).
  • Teaching and coordinating Confirmation preparation curriculum
  • Planning and teaching 10 Discipleship sessions from October – May (advance track).
  • Teaching 8 make-up sessions, offered to all candidates.
  • Coordinate content and communication with other small group leaders.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records, checking in with teens who are missing sessions and any other concerns from Discipleship or small group leaders.
  • Community Outreach
  • Being a representative of the parish, particularly to the youth group at community functions and student’s performances.
  • Attend student’s sporting events, plays, grad parties, musical performances, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Able to command, relate to and instruct a large middle school audience.
  • Able to build strong and healthy relationships with teens and young adults.
  • Able to communicate effectively with parents.
  • Able to manage, recruit and maintain/empower volunteers (high school, college, and adult).
  • Proficient with PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and Google Applications.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Education minimum of a BA, with a Religious Studies or Theology degree preferred.
  • Prior leadership experience working with children, teens and young adults (2+ years experience preferred in creating and leading Catholic formation experiences for that population).
  • Commitment to the mission, ministry, values, and faith traditions of Saint Mary Parish and the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland; and living in full communion with the Catholic Church.
