II. PRIMARY PURPOSES OF THIS POSITION The mission of the Roman Catholic Diocese of New Ulm is to be the loving face of Christ to others by imitating Jesus as Priest, Prophet, and King. In the faithful pursuit of that mission and through the intercession of St. Photina, the diocese is seeking a director for the Office of Evangelization.

The director of the Office of Evangelization assists the bishop in the implementation of all diocesan initiatives focused on evangelization, missionary discipleship, and Eucharistic Revival. The director’s primary focus will be implementing the bishop’s vision – inviting all people to know Christ Jesus, live the joy of the Gospel, and fulfill the great commission in a lifetime of missionary discipleship. The position will assist in establishing a shared understanding of evangelization, equipping individuals and area faith communities to live in the spirit of missionary discipleship, and implementing a cohesive plan of evangelization and outreach centered on the Eucharist, mindful of the cultures and communities within the Diocese of New Ulm.

The primary goals of evangelization in the diocese should flow from the structure of Go and Make Disciples (USCCB).

  • Goal I: To bring about in all Catholics such an enthusiasm for their faith that, in living their faith in Jesus, they freely share it with others.
  • Goal II: To invite all people in the United States, whatever their social or cultural background, to hear the message of salvation in Jesus Christ so they may come to join us in the fullness of the Catholic faith.
  • Goal III: To foster gospel values in our society, promoting the dignity of the human person, the importance of the family, and the common good of our society, so that our nation may continue to be transformed by the saving power of Jesus Christ.

III. CHURCH EMPLOYMENT RESPONSIBILITIES*

Employment in and by the Catholic Church is substantially different from secular employment. Church employees must conduct themselves in a manner that is consistent with and supportive of the mission and purpose of the Church and the Diocese of New Ulm. Their public behavior must not violate the faith, morals, or laws of the Church such that it can embarrass the Church or give rise to scandal. The employee filling this position must be an active, practicing Catholic in full communion with the Roman Catholic Church. The employee must provide a letter of support/recommendation from his/her current pastor or parish priest.

IV. REPRESENTATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support individuals in the Diocese of New Ulm to become missionary disciples of Christ in the following ways. (Equipping)
    • Empower people to encounter and respond in friendship to Jesus (John 17:3) by casting a vision of lifelong missionary discipleship.
    • Offer resources, formation, and training in practical skills including, but not limited to, personal testimony presentation, small group facilitation, and discipleship methodology mentoring, necessary for individuals and leaders to be fruitful evangelists.
    • Create processes and programs that identify and develop disciple-making leaders who intentionally form relationships with others (1 Thessalonians 2:8) to lead others to encounter Christ, raise up more disciples, and create welcoming communities in parishes, schools, religious education, and Catholic apostolates across the diocese.
    • Stay current and connected with the best practices of missionary discipleship envisioned in the writings of the Church and contemporary resources, as well as other movements and leaders in evangelization to fuel discipleship in the diocese.
  • Support pastors in their evangelization efforts and the development and implementation of diocesan evangelization initiatives for parishes.
    • Work with the Office of Continuing Education of Clergy and other diocesan offices, key leaders, and the faithful in creating and implementing a shared understanding of evangelization using a paradigm developed in the diocese.
    • Work collaboratively with pastors, parish leaders, and other identified groups to facilitate growth in their relationship with Jesus and engage as lifelong missionary disciples in Catholic parishes through efforts including creating and curating resources for parishes, providing formation in the area of evangelization, missionary-discipleship, and communicating the bishop’s vision for evangelization.
    • Aid clergy and pastoral teams in identifying the stages of spiritual growth by developing a paradigm and methodology for the diocese drawing on the evangelization process of encounter, transform, and send found in Go and Make Disciples (USCCB) to then implement among the people, effectively inviting each person into lifelong missionary discipleship with Christ in Catholic parish communities.
  • Support pastors and parishes in their planning efforts to become missionary communities.
    • Support each parish faith community within an evangelization framework using the diocesan paradigm – to become a missionary community.
    • Work with pastors to create and implement an environment to help individuals and families at each age and stage to grow in the Christian life and give witness to others in word and deed (2 Timothy 2:2).
    • Create an opportunity to evaluate parish activities using the diocesan paradigm, key measurements (i.e. Mass attendance), and key markers (i.e. having a plan, following the plan, following through on parish small groups, identifying metrics that measure success).
    • Work with the Office of Continuing Education of Clergy to offer priest and deacon enrichment opportunities, including events like priest study days.
    • Of the above-mentioned goals, the director will have to
      • see that existing infrastructure for accomplishing the first goal is in place and is being used by parishes and
      • create the infrastructure to accomplish the second goal.
  • Support leaders around the diocese in their efforts to become more missionary in their ministries.
    • Interface with the offices/ministries of the diocese, particularly the Office of Catechesis, Youth and Young Adult Ministry, Marriage and Family, Respect Life, and Catholic Schools on the basic goals of evangelization.
    • Collaborate with the Office of Communications to develop a regular, consistent image of welcome with content that maintains evangelization-oriented language in all public communications.
  • Maintains the Office of the Director of Evangelization
    • Attends staff meetings and other employee functions, including diocesan staff meetings as needed.

V. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be a fully initiated practicing Catholic in good standing with the Church. Must have a regular prayer life fueled by a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and the capacity to articulate the need for Christ, his Church, and the Church’s mission (Matthew 28:19-20) in one’s life.
  • Possess an ongoing knowledge and ability to comply with the norms of the Catholic Church as found in Holy Scripture, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the Code of Canon Law, Diocesan policies, and the Code of Conduct. Must complete ongoing Virtus training and pass child safety, state, and federal background checks.
  • Preferred bilingual or willingness to develop language competencies in Spanish.
  • Strong familiarity with applicable Church documents concerning evangelization including, but not limited to, Evangelii Nuntiandi, Evangelii Gaudium, Go and Make Disciples (USCCB), Disciples Called to Witness (USCCB) and Living as Missionary Disciples (USCCB).
  • Preferably have experience of 5-7 years in an (arch)diocese or parish in a leadership role.
  • Master’s degree, Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent work experience, preferably in areas of Catechetics, Evangelization, Theology, Ministry, or MBA with some theological education/experience.
  • Preferably have prior leadership experience in ministry, budget and staff management, and strategic planning.
  • Comfortable speaking to small and large groups, aware of divergent learning styles and outcomes, and offering inspiring and logistical directives.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and other tools.
  • Awareness of Hispanic cultures and willingness to learn about other cultures with competence in engaging diverse and minority communities.
