POSITION: Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries

SUPERVISED BY: Director of Faith Formation (DFF) and Pastor

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full-time, salaried “exempt” position

POSITION SUMMARY: The parish Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries (henceforth “Youth Minister”) is a full-time, salaried (“exempt”) employee, responsible for the evangelization, catechesis, and discipleship of those in middle school, high school, and young adults in the parish as well as the volunteers which they work with.

I – Parish Staff Member.
The Youth Minister is a professional member of St. Francis of Assisi’s Pastoral Staff who reports to the Director of Faith Formation and Pastor and works collaboratively with the Faith Formation staff. As a salaried “exempt” position, the Youth Minister works a flexible schedule determined by the activities of the week or season, and is not eligible for overtime pay. In addition, the Youth Minister shall:

  • Attend regular staff and department meetings, as scheduled.
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with staff.
  • Provide resources to parish staff on issues related to youth and youth ministry.
  • Serve as the youth ministry liaison to the Director of Faith Formation, Pastor, parish staff and parish community.

II – Parish Youth Ministry
The parish youth ministry program integrates adolescent catechesis into a comprehensive ministry serving and empowering young people. The Youth Minister will be responsible in the following areas:
General

  • Providing vision and coordination for the parish’s ministry to youth, beginning with junior high and continuing through young adult outreach
  • Fostering the involvement of young people in the life of the parish, including liturgical ministries, parish committees, and parish activities.
  • Providing opportunities for youth to develop servant leadership skills.
  • Coordinating the outreach to and evangelization of all youth in the parish’s boundaries
  • Providing appropriate support, services, and programs for parents of adolescents.
  • Advocating for a comprehensive vision of youth ministry, based on the 1997 USCCB document, Renewing the Vision: A Framework for Catholic Youth Ministry.
  • Developing a long-range, five-year plan for the development and expansion of parish youth ministry, incorporating the principles of Christus Vivet, Renewing the Vision, Sons and Daughters of the Light, the Directory for Catechesis (2020), and other relevant Church documents.
  • Promoting all areas of youth ministry: middle school, high school sacramental preparation, high school, and young adult outreach.
  • Working collaboratively with the Director of Faith Formation, Pastor, and the Business Manager in developing and implementing annual budgets and any annual fundraising efforts.
  • Serving as primary and remote liaison with the Diocese of Las Vegas Offices of Youth Ministry and Faith Formation and their programs, services and resources, to the extent that it benefits parish ministry
  • Collaborating with other youth ministers throughout the diocese
  • Continuing professional development in areas pertinent to youth ministry and the functions of this role.
  • Completing additional agreed upon duties as assigned by the DFF or Pastor.
    Volunteers
  • Coordinating the recruitment, discipleship, training, supporting, and evaluating of volunteers in all areas of youth ministry.

Junior High/Middle School

  • Collaborating with the Director of Faith Formation to continue developing an integrated middle school program that prioritizes evangelization and catechesis (non-sacramental prep) utilizing developmentally appropriate and effective methodology.
    High School
  • Developing a systematic and strategic plan for adolescent catechesis that utilizes a variety of formats, settings, and opportunities for engagement.
  • Coordinating all aspects of the 9-12 grade Confirmation program.
  • Coordinating a 9-12 grade parish youth group, distinct from the Confirmation process.
  • Coordinating group participation in retreats and youth conferences.
    Young Adult
  • Working collaboratively with young adult parishioners to develop an engaging young adult ministry.
  • Supporting young adult parishioners in broader parish involvement, including liturgical ministries, service, and outreach.
    Relationships
  • Director of Faith Formation and Pastor – immediate supervisors.
  • Parish Staff – The Youth Minister is a member of the parish Faith Formation Team and works congruently with parish staff – close staff cooperation, communication, input, and involvement at all times.
  • Youth Ministry Assistant – supervised and directed by the Youth Minister.
  • Parents and Parishioners – regular communication, seek input as appropriate.
  • Diocesan Offices – adherence to diocesan policies and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Practicing Roman Catholic, in good standing, with a strong commitment to his/her sacramental life and personal faith development.
  • Degree in Catholic Theology, Catechetics, Youth Ministry or equivalent is preferred.
  • Ability to catechize and evangelize in a classroom or large group setting.
  • Ability to teach and communicate the faith individually and in a classroom setting.
  • Proficient computer skills including Google Suite, Office, Canva are necessary; knowledge of Premier Pro, Photoshop, or PDS are a plus.
  • Knowledge of effective use of social media for effective outreach, adhering to best practices in safety and accountability.
  • Skilled in organization, record keeping, planning, and office communication are required.
  • Prior professional or volunteer ministry or teaching experience is preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication.
  • Ability to work both individually and as an integrated member of the Faith Formation Team.

The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor’s degree in Theology, Youth Ministry, Catechetics, or equivalent. Prior ministry or teaching experience, professional or volunteer, is preferred.
