Coordinator of Middle School Ministry

This is a full-time position and is eligible for benefits.
Reports to: Director of Youth Ministry
Safe Environment screening required for regular contact.

This position is responsible for the execution of the Middle School Youth Ministry of the parish.
The objectives of this ministry are:

  • To lead middle school students to encounter Jesus Christ in prayer, sacrament, and community.
  • To form middle school students to establish and personalize an active Catholic faith life.
  • To develop in middle school students a desire to participate in the liturgical life of the Catholic Church.
  • To prepare the middle school students for discernment of their vocation.
  • To generate a missionary heart eager to spread the Gospel to family, peers and those they have yet to meet.
  • To create an attitude of service to others as an expression of their faith.

St Vincent de Paul Parish has chosen Life Teen’s “Edge” program as its core program for ministering to our middle school youth. This position is responsible for the following specific activities:

  • Create Vision: Maintain a schedule of events designed to attract, hold and develop the interest of pre-teens in their faith
  • Educate: Utilize the EDGE curriculum and methodology to educate the middle school youth in their faith and to assist in preparing them for Confirmation.
  • Evangelize: Develop and execute activities to creatively and consistently reach out to middle school aged youth of the parish who are not current program participants, not attending Sunday Mass, or are otherwise in need of loving evangelization to develop their faith life.- – Encourage the involved youth to bring in new participants.
  • Edge Night: With priests and core team, plan and lead Edge nights including set up, clean up, coordination of volunteers, and presentation. Edge nights cover Catechetical topics, youth issues, and social topics. Relational Ministry is a key to the success of these nights. Edge is for 7th and 8th grade students.
  • Core Team: Lead a Core Team entrusted with the mission to accompany middle school youth. Work with the Director of Youth Ministry to recruit, train and coordinate a volunteer Core Team of Adults with a heart for youth ministry and teens to assist in ministry, supervision and the logistics associated with the program activities.
  • Teen Core Team Formation: Work with the youth ministry team to form teen leaders for the Edge Core Team including teen leader formation meetings, Edge teen leader meetings and individual relationship building.
  • Relational Ministry: Form relationships with middle school youth
  • Discern ways to reach out to 6th graders and to give them a taste of youth ministry
  • Every other year, plan and lead a Living Nativity for Edge youth

Retreats

  • Retreats: In cooperation with the Core Team, plan and conduct a boys retreat and girls retreat for the 7th and 8th grade youth. The retreats are 24 hours long. These retreats serve as an anchor for teen evangelization and spiritual development. They must be well prepared and require post retreat follow up to sustain spiritual growth and to generate outreach to new participants.

Catholic Youth Summer Camp

  • Promote and reserve spots for CYSC
  • Attend CYSC as much as able
    Mass Hysteria: Using the Mass Hysteria Curriculum, recruit adult and teen volunteers, promote, plan, lead and implement Mass Hysteria alongside the youth ministry team for incoming 6-8th graders

Youth Ministry Team Collaboration
Collaborate and meet regularly with other members of the youth ministry team to develop youth ministry vision, curriculum, integration of middle and high school, teen leader formation and commissioning, evaluation, parent outreach, prayer, and special events

Budget development

Confirmation

  • Attend the Confirmation Retreat to build relationships and know what the 8th grade youth are receiving so to discern how to integrate it into middle school programming.
  • Help with the planning and implementation of the Confirmation Day of Reflection
  • Attend Confirmation and help as needed
  • Manage Administrative needs for Confirmation

Collaborate in the implementation of the Refuel program for religious education
Work closely with the Director of Youth Ministry and REfuel Coordinator for event planning and parent communication
Attend and help emcee once a month parent/student Nights of Light

Service
Incorporate the need to give service to others as part of growth in the faith. This includes the Annual Edge Christmas Box project in partnership with the St. Vincent dePaul Society, as well as others.

Additional Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Monthly Edge and REfuel Newsletters
  • Pray and receive the sacraments regularly
  • Stewardship of the Life Center in a well-organized manner that leaves a good impression with parishioners
  • Collaborate with Parish Staff
  • Collaborate with Diocesan staff and other youth ministers
  • Regularly participate in prayer and professional development to stay up-to-date with changing culture and trends and to be engaged with the climate of youth ministry and promptings of the Holy Spirit

Our youth ministry program is currently restructuring to include a Director of Youth Ministry, a High School Coordinator, and a Middle School Coordinator. The parish staff and youth ministry team is highly collaborative and evangelically minded.
