Blog/CYM Blog Teaching for a Pro-Life Generation by Amanda Grubbs This week at Edge we did the Edge Night from the Social Justice semester entitled Life is Wonderful. It is a night all about the dignity of the human person addressing some specific topics such as abortion, euthanasia, and the death penalty. At first I was a little leery as to how this topic would come across to a vast array of 11-14 year olds. As a Core Team we discussed with our youth minister how to make this night emphasize the beauty of life rather than the horrors of these issues, and, I must say, that after this night I was greatly inspired by this generation of youth. Not necessarily for their stunning responses or knowledge of the subject but just in general their natural reactions during the Proclaim. A huge reason that this night was such a success was because the Core Member who gave the Proclaim did an incredible job! The talk addressed some very heavy subjects but she was able to use very positive visuals and created a lot of audience interaction which not only kept the youth excited but it kept them engaged for a bit longer of a talk. She utilized simple poster board to create a Pro-Life vs Culture of Death dichotomy and had wrapped up different pictures of positive images as presents. This not only gave the youth an opportunity to un-wrap presents, which . . . let’s be real . . . we all love doing, but it also brought home the point that life is a gift and is sacred. Each picture had a corresponding Culture of Death issue, so for instance a picture of a pregnant woman and her husband kissing her stomach was then opposed with the word abortion. It was during this specific example during the talk that I got goose bumps from the general reaction of the crowd of youth. As the Core Member put up the picture of the pregnant woman they all cheered and “awed” at it. Then when she pulled out the piece of paper that said Abortion, every youth in the room booed and yelled out “No!” and “Never!” It was clear to see that not only did they understand what abortion was, but they also hated it. This gave me so much hope for this generation, that their natural inclinations are still that of truth. Later too during small groups the youth expressed that they did not know that it was such a big thing, and when they found out how far reaching abortion was all of them were overcome with sadness. This showed me not only the true beauty of the heart of youth but also the importance of educating the youth in the truth of what it means to be Pro-Life. These issues, while they may be hard to address are so essential. They need to know the truth of what abortion, euthanasia, and the death penalty are and why, even if they are legal, they are not moral.
