An Open Letter to the Wives of Youth Ministers

I want to give a shout-out to all the wives of youth ministers out there, the women behind the scenes keeping the ship sailing.

A thank you for all the sacrifices you make for your husband and the teens he serves. For all the late nights you are home alone, cooking dinner for everyone, putting kids to bed, or watching TV by yourself while he is out at Edge Nights and Life Nights. Thank you for all the times that you have rearranged your calendar to fit with all the retreats and parish events. All the times that you have had to keep his dinner warm while he is kept late talking with a teen in need.

Thank you for all the kind – albeit uncomfortable – smiles when yet another teen girl touches your pregnant belly. For being the rock star of hand sanitizer whenever your kids are at youth events. Thank you for being the quiet prayer warrior at home in the chaos or in the back of the conference room while your husband presents.

You are invaluable to youth ministry. You are an example to the young women of the parish of what it is to be a catholic woman, wife, and perhaps mother. You are the strong heart to hold up your husband when he is troubled with the sad stories of his teens. You are the cheerleader encouraging him on when he wants to give up. You are the warm welcome at the end of a long night or weekend away.

To all the wives of youth ministers out there, keep fighting with him, keep praying for him and his teens, and keep shining your beautiful light to those around you. You all have an irreplaceable role in this mission of the Church to evangelize the youth.

Never forget that you are not forgotten, and that your sacrifices do not go unseen.

So thank you.
