Music/My Culture/Teen Culture You Are Wanted by Amanda Grubbs Let's take a little trip down the country road with Hunter Hayes. I was recently listening to 'Wanted.' I know . . . so last year . . . but you know what never fades with time, our desire to be 'wanted' . . . so HA! As I listened to this song I often picture myself dramatically belting the chorus into a microphone as a country singer star. While, in all actuality, I am just sitting at my desk bobbing my head and swaying to the music (desks are rather inhibiting to any other type of dancing). But as I sat and desk danced I started to think about how much this song cuts to the heart of most girls. I thought about a high school dance I chaperoned recently and how all the girls freaked out when this song came on and got into their little dance circles and all belted every single word. Most of the guys just stood around looking confused but the smart ones were suddenly thirsty again and went to the water cooler for the 5th time that night. What are you saying, Hunter, that causes such an effect on every girl who hears this song? Is it the sincere truth you proclaim in telling girls that their beauty is deeper than their make-up? Is it that you want girls to feel better than their fairy tales and best dreams? Or is it your impressive math skills knowing that 'one and one makes two'? While all of those points are true, I would say that there's something deeper going on here. The main line of this song is 'I want to make you feel wanted.' What does it mean to be wanted? Why is that something that every human heart (even you fellas out there) desires so deeply? The definition of wanted is 'to desire greatly' to 'request the presence or assistance' of someone, 'to have need,' to be in 'the condition or quality of lacking something.' When we desire to be wanted, essentially we desire to be desired. We need someone else because we are lacking something. Every single human heart is in need of something – love. In essence when we desire the presence of someone else, when we want someone to notice us or want to be with us, we desire to be loved. So Hunter, let's see what you suggest will fill this need and desire of the hearts of all your fans, how will you make said girl in your song feel wanted? Hunter offers to wrap her up, to kiss her lips, to hold her hand forever. Okay . . . good start Hunter. I would like to interject here though and let you know that there is much more need of the human heart than to simply have a hand held forever (that would probably be very uncomfortable, kind of inconvenient, and what if you have sweaty hands . . . I don't know if I am willing to commit to this forever hand holding thing). Just to be clear I am not knocking this song or Hunter Hayes, I am actually impressed by a good cute love song with a positive message. But what I am trying to say is that there is so much more to feeling complete and wanted than what any mere human being can offer. The deepest longing of the human heart is to be wanted, to be loved, and to know it not just to feel it. And the truth is that you are wanted, each and every single one of you is wanted more than you could ever fathom. How do I know this you may be wondering, try this on for size: 'Lord you know when I sit and when I stand . . . you understand my thoughts . . . with all my ways you are familiar . . . you formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother's womb' (Pslam 139:1-3,13). 'Even the hairs of your head have all been counted' (Luke 12:7). 'The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty savior, he will rejoice over you with gladness and renew you in his love' (Zephaniah 3:17). 'For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life' (John 3:16). 'Behold I am with you always, until the end of the age' (John 3:16). The God of the universe created you and knew exactly who you were going to be when you were still in your mother's womb. He has loved you from the moment He thought of bringing you to life as His creation and He has a plan for your life. He cares about you so much that He is constantly thinking about you and with you, He knows you so well and loves you so much that He even knows how many hairs are on your head (Hunter I would like to see you try to count that). In our desire to be wanted, we don't have to go any further than the One who created us. God does not prove His love for us by simply hugging us or holding our hand. No. He does something far greater than that, He sends his own Son to die on a cross for us. He came to free us from our sins and all darkness, to free us from loneliness and despair, and to open to us eternal life. God loves you so much that He wants you to be in heaven with Him forever. Do you want to feel wanted? Then look no further than the God who is ever present in your life, knocking on the door of your heart (Revelation 3:20). He is there waiting for you to come to Him so that He can make you feel wanted, because you are wanted.
