Healthy Soul/Living Out Your Faith/My Life 3 Promises That Will Change Your Life by Kelly Colangelo Growing up, I made a lot of promises: I promise I’ll do my homework… I promise I won’t make a mess… I promise I’ll always love you… I promise I won’t tell anyone… Growing up, I broke a lot of promises. I mean, c’mon, my understanding of promises was keeping secrets between my friends about which boys we thought were cute or who we secretly wanted to marry (and what our potential last names would sound like). Now, going beyond the elementary school version of a “promise”, the real definition is a commitment by someone to do or not do something. I promise that I will bring the car home by Midnight….You and I know — promises like this involves hard work, discipline and integrity. My challenge for you requires just that. Make 3 promises. Yes, 3 promises. These promises can be something you don’t have to share with others or make to others – just yourself and God. Here we go: Promise 1: Don’t miss Sunday Mass The Eucharist is the source and summit of our faith. What does this mean? The Eucharist is a sacrament, a sacrifice, and a sacred banquet. Under the appearance of bread and wine, Jesus is totally present in this sacrament…let me repeat that – TOTALLY PRESENT: body and blood, soul and divinity. He offers Himself in sacrifice to the Father, and is received as spiritual nourishment. Are you thinking wow? It is a total “wow” and an amazing gift to us! The Eucharist gives us life! Give 100% and make every attempt to be at Sunday Mass! Promise 2: Pray everyday Saint John Chrysostom said, “It is simply impossible to lead, without the aid of prayer, a virtuous life.” For me, it is easy to pray when I need or want something, but not so much when I already think I have what I need. It took me a long time to realize, God knows what I need more than I do! We need to praise God, good times, bad times, and the mediocre times. He has our back, no matter what. Promise 3: Remain Pure Ladies – If he really loves you, he will respect you enough to uphold your dignity as a woman. Gentlemen – If she really loves you, she will wait with you… maybe this is something you struggle with or maybe this is something your passionate about and you even signed a pledge card promising that you would remain pure. In today’s sex saturated culture it’s not always as easy as it sounds. As a teen, the thought of “purity” seemed as if it was in outer space to me. It wasn’t until my understanding of the beauty of the human person that I was able to grasp why “purity” and all that other stuff I learned in my youth group was important. Turn to Christ for prayer and trust that God’s way is the best way for us. These promises changed my life. Don’t rationalize or make excuses for yourself. Push yourself a bit, work a little longer, sacrifice something else, persist, and persevere! Following through on these promises will not only bring you joy, but freedom to live the life God is calling you to!
