"Without You": What David Guetta Says About Jesus

I have a really hard time picking favorites. I can never narrow it down to one thing – favorite musician, favorite movie, favorite food. I just can’t do it. It’s too limiting and honestly, it will probably change next week so why bother?

However …

I have a (current) favorite song. I blast it every time it comes on the radio. Sometimes I sing, but often I just listen. It’s beautiful, prayerful, sacramental and on the iTunes top ten singles chart.

Now I kind of doubt – ok, I really doubt – that those are the words David Guetta uses to describe his song “Without you.” Have you heard it? Here are some of the lyrics in case you haven’t:

I am lost, I am vain,
I will never be the same
Without you, without you

I won’t run, I won’t fly
I will never make it by
Without you, without you

In my mind those lyrics can only apply to Jesus. God can (and will) use all sorts of ways to point us back to Him. This song is only one example of how God has spoken to me in unexpected ways.

The truth is, I can do nothing without God. When I don’t invite Him into my daily life, everything I do seems fruitless, selfish and exhausting. But with Him, I can do anything! (Philippians 4:13) He blesses all my efforts and brings good out of them – even the stuff I mess up.

There were so many times in my life when I thought, “How am I ever going to do this?” But with God’s grace everything turned out fine and has made me a stronger person.

The other thing I love about this song is that the second half talks about being distanced from the one (God) you need and how miserable that is. Isn’t that how we feel when we’ve sinned and need to run to Confession? Being re-united with God after a good confession makes me want to jump up and dance.

The next time you hear this song, try listening to it in a different light. Is this song about your relationship with Jesus?

I know I said I can’t pick favorites but as far as choosing the love of my life that I don’t want to live without – Jesus definitely wins.
