Why I Did It: Kevin Fenter, Franciscan University of Steubenville

Kevin Fenter

Then: I served on First Session Summer Staff in 2009 at Covecrest and First Session Service Crew in 2010 at Covecrest

Now: I am a senior at Franciscan University, graduating in the Spring. Afterwards, I plan on doing what God wants, but not exactly sure what.

Was it serving for a summer worth it? It was completely worth it. God transforms us when we serve and give out of our poverty. It is when we realize we have nothing to give, that we cannot do all these crazy things that we desire to do that we allow God to have his way and work miracles. Summer Staff changes lives because we realize that we CAN do great things, but only with God, only with his Holy Spirit. It allowed me to be a vessel, an instrument in the hands of God, from which His Spirit flowed forth and changed lives. I would totally do it again if God called me to it.

Do you keep in touch with your group? I do keep in touch with a lot of the Staff from my year, some more than others. I have a lot of really great friends from Staff and I know I have a ton of prayer warriors constantly interceding for me. In fact, two people from my staff are currently in religious life. God is crazy!

Why should a college student apply to be a summer missionary at camp? It is an opportunity to live out your faith and do something completely radical and crazy with your life. You are taking part in the mission of Jesus! You are being an instrument to bring souls, whether they be teens or adults, out of the darkness and into the marvelous light of God’s presence. Summer Staff is also an amazing time to build community with people who are on fire for the Lord. I have seen great fruit borne from this with people who went to more secular colleges or went to colleges that lacked a strong faith community. It encouraged them to reach out to those around them and to build community where they are.
