Then: I was on Summer Staff, Session 1, Summer 2007!!!
Now: I graduated from Florida State university with a Bachelors of the Arts in Religion in August 2010, I am currently working 2 part time jobs which basically add up to a full time job. I am applying to graduate schools for Fall 2011, seeking a Master in Social work. So God-willing, I will be able to pursue a future career working and helping others.
Was it worth it? It was definitely worth it. It was a Summer that truly rejuvenated my faith and got me excited to return to my school full of life and ready to spread the good news!
Do you keep in touch? Its been years and it is difficult to keep in touch. I would say I definitely keep in touch by facebook and there are a few that I talk on the phone with regularly. I see them in the Eucharist every time I experience the mass though. and I still consider them as members of my family. I believe the last time I saw some of my Summer Staff brothers and sisters was in Fall 2009, I was on retreat at Covecrest and some of them were working a seperate retreat (the high ropes coarse).. As I saw them from a distance, we ran to each other to give each hugs! They are family, always and forever, no matter how long its been since we’ve talked or how far apart we live.
Should a college student become a summer missionary at a Life Teen camp? College students should apply because it truly is a once in a lifetime experience. As a summer staffer, you not only get to bond with others who are your age and gain a community of friends and family, but you get to truly dive deeper into your faith and the mystery of Christ’s love. And while doing all of this, you get to be wonderful examples for those who are younger than you impacting their lives. Not only was I blessed with opportunity to be a on summer staff, but I was a camper 3 years prior. Summer Staffers truly do impact the lives of others. I remember numerous of the names and faces of those before me who reached out to me. And I was able to return in Summer 2007 and reach out to others. Its amazing!
Tell me more about what you’re doing now. The first one is at a national non-profit organization called Aging with Dignity. The mission is to affirm and safeguard the human dignity of individuals as they age and to promote better care for those near the end of life. The life and work of Mother Teresa of Calcutta served as the inspirational foundation of Aging with Dignity. We distribute and sell the closest thing there is to a national advance directive- it includes a “living will” and “durable power of attorney for healthcare” – basically you grant legal authority to the person you name as your health care agen to make medical treatment decisions if you couldnt speak for yourself. I am a shipping assistant, I answer phones, pack up documents and ship them Fed Ex or USPS, and run errands. My second job is at Catholicprayercards.org or Catholicprinting.org. I work as a shipping assistant, shipping catholic prayer cards, medals, and other Catholic items to those who order.
