Jesus the Dishwasher

I am one of the freshmen fortunate enough to have landed a job my first semester of college. I started working at the bakery two weeks before school started, and I love the job! One day, as I was sweeping the flour-and-crumb-covered floor, my joy poured out of me in a silent prayer of thanksgiving.

Five minutes later, as if God was saying, “let’s see how sincere you really are.” I was sent to the most dreaded place in the bakery – the dish room.

You Better Work: The Importance and Dignity of Work

If you’re living with your parents you may not have to work to get the things you want. Maybe they buy all your video games. There are still some great reasons to work though. For one thing, spending a few hours freezing your fingers off at the Drive-Thru window makes you appreciate all the hard work your parents do to put a roof over your head.

It also gives you experience in a workplace — like how to get along with others and follow your manager’s orders. You may even get a reference for college, or your next job. And lastly, it’s never too early to start saving money. Trust me.

Embracing Poverty

As the new year began, I was still jobless and doubting that it was God's plan for me to make such a big move in just a few months. However, I went to daily Mass one day and found myself begging God to help me understand what He had planned for me. I remember praying over and over, 'Lord, give me the grace to follow you, even unto death.'
