2011-12_StaffPicksOhForJoy

We want to share with you some fun and occasionally outrageous Christmas stuff during this Advent and Christmas season! And to kick it off, check out this video of the David Crowder Band – turned into nutcrackers! Though they don’t do any nut cracking, they do play their instruments very skillfully considering their hands are wooden knobs.

Life Teen Staff Picks: Breaking Dawn

2011-11_BreakingDawn

I just want to be sure we’re clear – I’m not on “Team Edward” or “Team Jacob.” But because Breaking Dawn is coming out today, here’s a hilarious spoof that SNL did. I thought you might enjoy this. If you don’t get it – maybe it’s time to read some classics.

Life Teen Staff Picks: iPieta App

It’s the perfect app for people who want to grow in knowledge of the Catholic faith or deepen their prayer life. The ability to have so much mobile Catholic goodness on your phone is mind-boggling, and gives you a great way to pass the time when you’re sitting waiting for a friend to show up, standing alone in a line … or you’re bored in a meeting (not that I’ve ever done that).

Life Teen Staff Picks: Walk.

I started going on walks to exercise because an injured knee prevents me from being able to run anymore. Although I may not be burning as many calories, I have come to really appreciate walking. It is such a nice leisurely activity to unwind at the end of the day. I find that I can use it as my quiet time to think, pray or sometimes just not think at all! My parents only live about 2 miles from me, so actually twice this week I walked over to their house for dinner. In a world that is so busy and fast-paced, there is something exciting about walking to my destination, as the cars whizz by on the street beside me. It forces me to take a minute to slow down in the midst of my busy day.

Life Teen Staff Picks: Daily Mass

At first I was irritated that someone would have enough nerve to come up to me and say that I should be going to daily Mass. After all, wasn’t Sunday Mass enough? But it got me thinking, “Why would I be irritated at someone suggesting I go to Mass every day?” I realized that the reason I was irritated was because she was speaking the truth and I did need to be going to Mass more often.

Life Teen Staff Picks: X Factor

Check out these incredible clips from the show The X Factor that millions of people have watched! Gabe Telepak shares his favorite show and why he thinks it’s awesome. “Where this show shines however, is the age bracket (allowing older contestants and those as young as twelve to participate) and the deeper involvement of the participant’s families. You can also tell just how the judges care for their participants and feel the emotion behind the words of the singers. I can’t describe it, this show just has that mysterious “X Factor” that makes it awesome. See for yourself.”

Life Teen Staff Picks: Pumpkin.

Even if the climate outside isn’t playing the part, there is one thing that always puts me in a “Fall” mood – pumpkin. I’ll admit it. From now till Thanksgiving, I’m obsessed. I could blame Starbucks and their tasty Pumpkin Spice Lattes, but it goes much deeper than that.

Think about it. Is there another food that you are encouraged to gut, carve and then display on your doorstep? What other produce do people visit its “patches”? Nobody cares about overgrown cantaloupes, but a 1,810 pound pumpkin (the current world record) makes the news.

Life Teen Staff Picks: Musician Erin Gauvin

I had to share this musician with you all! I love her music and I think you will too. Erin has been playing with Ike Ndolo and mentored by Audrey Assad. The first result of this being “I’ve a Seat,” a song about addiction and reconciliation that’s as confiding as it is catchy. Erin is currently working on music for her first EP which she is hoping to release by the spring.

Life Teen Staff Picks: Who Needs the Super Bowl for Good Commercials? [Video]

“For those of you like me, who wait all year long for the Super Bowl just to see the commercial breaks, this is for you. Despite TiVo, DVR and it not being Super Bowl Sunday, Subaru has caught my attention with the current commercial they’re running. In just a few seconds it tells the story of a dad handing over the keys to his teenage daughter, a scene that may be all too familiar to those of you just receiving your license. I just love it! It’s so simple, but I love the story it tells. One thing I’d change though, the girls should be wearing the same shirts! Guess we all have some room for improvement”

Life Teen Staff Picks: "The Natural"

“My favorite movie of all time is a baseball movie called The Natural. Because it came out in 1984, there is a good chance that most of you have never seen it, but believe it or not, you’ve probably heard the soundtrack at some point. As Major League Baseball prepares for the postseason and World Series, check out this movie. It’s a great story of passion, redemption, and integrity, and it will leave you feeling inspired to do something great with your life.”

Life Teen Staff Picks: Popcorn and a Movie

“Return to Me is a movie that my whole family would sit down and watch together while I was growing up. My favorite part of the movie is the older men. They add a little comic relief to the story. Occasionally, my mom would treat us to her homemade caramel corn as we all gathered to watch a movie. I’m not sure I’m supposed to be sharing her family recipe but I figured just this once it’d be okay!”

Life Teen Staff Picks: Mumford & Sons Cover

Mumford & Sons is one of the most exciting new bands I’ve discovered in a long time. Their first album “Sigh No More” was an underground hit when it landed in Spring 2010 and quickly gained attention due to their heart – wrenching lyrics, stirring harmonies, and pounding rhythms. When Audrey Assad and Jars of Clay decided to cover their title song this past winter on their tour, I knew I wanted to listen.
