Immersed in the Word

2013-05_LT-ImmersedintheWord

I bring this up because I have recently realized how important this “remembering” is in my relationship with God’s word. If I do not immerse myself in God’s word like I immerse myself in music, TV, etc., then it will never affect my speech or habits and I will quickly find myself forgetful and ignorant of Scripture. And, as St. Jerome reminds us, “ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.”

Biblical Superpowers: Miracles in Acts of the Apostles

2012-04_LT-SuperPowers

One of the reasons I love the book of Acts so much is because of the amazing miracle stories. They aren’t just high drama; many of them are also high comedy. Let’s take a look at some of the miracles in the Acts of the Apostles:
Acts 5:15: Peter is so filled with the Holy Spirit that even his shadow has the power to heal, a fact that makes Groundhog Day even less impressive.
Acts 8:39: after teaching about Christ and baptizing the Ethiopian eunuch, the Holy Spirit snatched Philip immediately in a scene almost reminiscent of Star Trek.

Where Have You Been?

2013-03_LT-Rihanna

We, like the Samaritan woman, continually ask God, “Where have you been?” or “Where were you?” when relationships or life don’t go the way we planned.

The thing is God never asks us, “Where have you been” because He knows where we’ve been. He knows the websites, the parties, the rooms we have entered, and the bottles we have opened to satisfy our thirst. He knows the relationships we have been in and the lines we have crossed emotionally, physically, and sexually. And yet, He sits at the wall of the well waiting for us to discover Him and accept His mercy and love.

The Bible: Is It Reliable Reading?

2012-10_LT-ReliableReading

Still, there are countless people who try to say that the Bible is “unreliable” or “outdated.” Many people – some of whom are well-read and quite intellectual – do everything they can to debunk the validity of Scripture, thinking that if they can exploit seeming “inconsistencies” or supposed “errors” they can somehow do away with Christianity and even God. That’s the first mistake . . .

In the Catholic life, you have to live the “both/and.” You have to make a resolve and accompany it with prayer. If you want to follow Christ you have to lay down your life and take up the cross.

Because we are physical beings, Christ uses physical things to interact with us. In the Gospel He heals through touch and in the Sacraments He gives us Himself through the things He has created. Are you going to let God heal and restore you today?

Every one of us occasionally has doubts about the existence of God, or we struggle with trusting in God. We can’t allow these attacks however, to form our judgement about the love of God. His love for us is infinite and He is always ready to fulfill us both physically and spiritually.

Why Do Catholics Follow the Ten Commandments?

WDC_TemplateSin

Catholics follow the Ten Commandments because Christ, Himself, followed them and because He told others to follow them (Matthew 19:16-19). We also follow them because they were given to us by God. In the book of Exodus we read how God himself gave these commandments to the Israelites through the help of Moses. However there is more to following the Ten Commandments than just because “God told us to.”

We obey God’s commands because He loves us! Because God loves us and loves us perfectly we can always trust His word. Also, because God created us we can trust that He always knows what is best for us.

The Eucharist is the greatest gift we have received from our heavenly Father. This gift is even better than the miracle of Christ multiplying the loafs and fishes because it is not just bread, but God among us and within us. The Eucharist is a taste of heaven on earth.

Who we are is more important than what we do. Don’t ever forget to value people over the projects that they accomplish. This is especially important in regards to your priest. Make sure he knows you appreciate him for who he is, not just what he does.

How Do I Start Reading the Bible?

How Do I Start Reading the Bible

I meet tens of thousands of people a year at different events. Most of them are Catholic Christians who want to start reading the Bible but don’t know where to start. So if you’ve ever wanted to go deeper into God’s Word but haven’t known how to approach it, allow me to suggest a few tips (so you can learn from my mistakes).

Like anything else, if you want to build something – in this case, your knowledge and love for the Scriptures – you don’t just grab a hammer and some nails and start pounding. To ensure that you don’t just jump in and then quit out of frustration or confusion, there are certain things you can do to be more successful.

We’ll attack this on three levels – the tools, the blueprint and the construction. By the end you’ll have ten total steps to help you build your bodily temple into a Biblical fortress, able to resist anything the devil can throw at you.

“You are not the sum of your sins, you are the sum of the Father’s love.” Pope John Paul II said this and the readings reflect it this week. When we give ourselves over to God, He will use us to do great things because He sees the potential in us when all we see is the brokenness.

We need Jesus.

Whether we like to admit it or not, we’re not capable of anything on our own. God wants to be there for us every day – to be our daily bread. This week as we celebrate our independence as a country, let’s also celebrate our dependence as Christians on the King of Kings.
