We Are Never Getting Back Together: Advice for Breakups

Q: Do you have any advice for getting through a breakup? A: Listen to Taylor Swift’s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” (or something comparable) over and over again. Eat a pint of ice cream or a box of chocolates. Let yourself be sad… for a little while. Then start moving on. How? Try […]

Are There Any Good Guys Out There?

It turns out he was right! Shortly after ending things with my boyfriend, the uncle of one my students asked me out. Turns out he had seen me months earlier and wanted to ask me out, but heard I had a boyfriend and stayed away.

One year later, we were married.

Now it doesn’t always happen this fast. But it’s not going to happen at all if you cling to mediocre or bad relationships. Likewise, if you’re single – entering into a relationship just to be dating is not going to improve your chances of finding the right guy.

Flirting 101: The Do’s and Don’ts for Girls

So you've met a guy. What do you do next? Act interested? But you don't want to come on too strong. Ignore him? But then he won't know you're alive. Knock him to the ground? No, that only works in first grade. Though I've landed quite a catch now (shout out to my wonderful husband, Brian!), I remember it all too well . . . trying to get the attention of a guy you're interested in without making a fool of yourself.

Flirting 101: The 4 Things Guys Should Do

Ah, flirting. That ancient art of trying to get the attention of someone you're attracted to while trying to prevent oneself from looking like a complete tool. I'll never forget my friend from kindergarten who thought he would win a girl's heart by putting all of his toy cars in envelopes and giving them to her each morning as gifts. By third grade we had matured and moved on to advanced techniques like ignoring or teasing the girls that we liked.

You Are Wanted

As I listened to this song I often picture myself dramatically belting the chorus into a microphone as a country singer star. While, in all actuality, I am just sitting at my desk bobbing my head and swaying to the music (desks are rather inhibiting to any other type of dancing). But as I sat and desk danced I started to think about how much this song cuts to the heart of most girls.

Is Pornography Cheating?

But the battle isn't over.

I have to recognize my humanness and be vigilant. There's a spiritual battlefield happening around me (and a selfishness in my own heart still) with an enemy wanting to tear me down, especially in this time of engagement and preparation for marriage. I'm thankful that the Lord rooted this out of me; I would never want to bring this evil into my marriage. But I also understand the struggle and the humility I've learned in passing through what will likely be the major battle of our generation, and the battle our sons and daughters will all have to face.

Oh, Happy Fault

For a while, though, I lost hope in a happy ending to my story. I thought I was 'tainted' or 'damaged goods.' I didn't know Jackie was coming (if I had, I would never have left my room!). She's been saving herself for marriage, and I had to confess to her that I didn't. I messed up. But the way that Jackie loves me ‘Ìâ‰âÂÌâ‰Ûù in such a pure, disinterested, and benevolent way ‘Ìâ‰âÂÌâ‰Ûù has brought so much healing. She told me one night that she doesn't want the 'Bobby of 2007' or the 'Bobby of 2010;' she wants the 'Bobby of now.'

All of Me: 3 Reasons Why I’m Waiting for Marriage

I'm 29 and a virgin.

No, I don't have some incurable alien disease that causes people to shutter at the sight of me. No, I don't have the sex drive of a grandma (unless it's my grandma who had 11 kids). And, no, I'm not Tim Tebow's girlfriend.

Forever Alone: An Ode to Singles

Warning: first I'm going to rant, then I shall apologize, and then I will offer a solution for you because I'm nice like that. And because I like you and want you to be happier than you look in your #foreveralone selfie and sound in your #foreveralone tweet.

Should We Date?

So in an attempt to redeem myself (because apparently 'Just deal with it' doesn't cut it) here are some of the ways I've learned I can change my bad day into a day in which I feel blessed.

Why I Am Getting Married

I’ve experienced life without my fiancÌÄ®ÕÌâå©e Jackie and I want no more of it. After years of discernment and three years in seminary formation, I've been graced with clarity and peace over this decision. I want to soak up as much Jackie Francois as I can in the time I have been given in this life. Her love has already broken me free of so many stubborn memories and unnecessary fear, giving me courage to become the man God needs me to be, a man that will do his best to lead her to Heaven.

Contraception and Romantic Attraction

It's common knowledge that hormonal contraception is detrimental to a woman's physical health, but there's little discussion regarding how the same drugs affect the health of her romantic relationships. Hormonal contraception changes a woman's romantic chemistry. How?

The Friend Zone: Are you always her friend and never her boyfriend?

In high school I was one of those 'nice Christian guys,' you know, the guy who was always the good friend, but not the boyfriend. I used to complain with my other 'nice guy' friends about being put into the friend zone, that awkward place when you have feelings for a girl but she just wants to be friends. I've been called 'a good friend,' 'like a brother,' and 'a catch . . . for someone else.'

Everything I Know About Love I Learned From Taylor Swift

If you haven't listened to T-Swift's new album Red, go clear your schedule and come back to this blog later. My words will be empty and boring if you aren't hearing the refrain of 'All too well' or 'Treacherous' on repeat in your head.

If you have been listening to her album, courtesy of iTunes, Target, a Papa John's Pizza, or a YouTube playlist, then we are definitely friends. (If you participated in any sort of countdown to Red, you're instantly elevated to best friend status.)

Miss Swift's album is about more love and heartbreak than I've ever experienced. Like, ever.

Where’s My Prince Charming?

Eventually the topic of guys comes up, and, on occasion, girls begin to complain about how there aren't any good guys left or that guys today aren't respectful or they don't open doors. Somehow as women we've created an expectation that guys, to be worthy of us, must look, act, and sing, like Prince Charming . . .

Practical Advice for a Pure Life

For some of us, myself included, telling me not to do something isn't enough of a reason for me not to do it. It helps to have some insight into why we do what we do. Sex isn't bad and your desires don't make you evil. We should seek purity because we know our sexuality is a gift from God and can point us to heaven. In my own journey, I've seen the way an impure life can damage hearts, friendships, self-esteems, and souls.
