Everything I Know About Love I Learned From Taylor Swift

If you haven't listened to T-Swift's new album Red, go clear your schedule and come back to this blog later. My words will be empty and boring if you aren't hearing the refrain of 'All too well' or 'Treacherous' on repeat in your head.

If you have been listening to her album, courtesy of iTunes, Target, a Papa John's Pizza, or a YouTube playlist, then we are definitely friends. (If you participated in any sort of countdown to Red, you're instantly elevated to best friend status.)

Miss Swift's album is about more love and heartbreak than I've ever experienced. Like, ever.

I Am Not Leaving.

Then I thought, “This is for me.” Isn’t this what I long to hear from our Father in heaven “I will never leave you”? Don’t our hearts burn when we read the promise in scripture that God will be with us, He will never leave us, He will never forget us, He will never abandon us.

Practical Advice for a Pure Life

For some of us, myself included, telling me not to do something isn't enough of a reason for me not to do it. It helps to have some insight into why we do what we do. Sex isn't bad and your desires don't make you evil. We should seek purity because we know our sexuality is a gift from God and can point us to heaven. In my own journey, I've seen the way an impure life can damage hearts, friendships, self-esteems, and souls.

How Far is Too Far?: Purity in Dating

This October, my boyfriend and I will celebrate our 1 year anniversary of dating. Needless to say, I'm excited to celebrate the day with a bunch of cheesy romantic gifts and a fancy dinner!

However, as the day comes closer, I find myself reflecting on all the things I've learned these last twelve months, especially about how to live a holy and chaste relationship.

Real Sex & Respect

But we live in a world that doesn't really get that.

A world where people sing songs about how they're perfectly good at being 'bad' and radio edits of songs switch 'love' in for the 'f' word like there's no difference. Society has taken something sacred, designed by God to unite couples in the Sacrament of Marriage and cooperate in bringing new life into the world ‘Ìâ‰âÂÌâ‰Ûù and categorized it as just another extracurricular activity.

Why Do Catholics Wear Chastity Rings?

This promise – to only say what you mean with your body – is what chastity rings signify. Normally they are worn by those who plan on getting married and are currently striving to live a chaste single life.

Chastity rings are traditionally worn on the ring finger of the left hand, holding the place for the wedding ring they will receive from their future spouse.

God Made Sex (and He Made it Sacred)

God is one creative Creator. He gave us the cosmos, the sun, the moon, and the stars. He gave us the mountains and the seas, volcanoes and icebergs, tropical rainforests and sand-covered beaches. He gave us the humpback whale, the platypus, the giraffe and the dragonfly. God also gave us humanity. God created us male and female … beautifully distinct and wonderfully made in His divine image. God created marriage and God created sex.

Did you catch that last line?

Male and Female: What’s the Point?

Have you ever wondered why God made you male or female? Think about it . . . God could have made us 'unisex' like that billboard I saw in the airport, but he made us two genders. Why?

Well if we want to understand why we were created, we have to look back to the one who created us – God. In the Book of Genesis we learn that . . .

Bold Manhood

As a result, 'loving your neighbor' has become more of a general accepting of someone for everything they choose to be and do. This idea is summed up as the great 'virtue' of tolerance. On the surface, it seems like a great and honorable ideal. Everyone can do what they want without being judged and nobody hurts anyone else’s feelings.

Yet we find something radically different in the biblical vision of love. In the gospel of John, Jesus says 'No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends' (John 15:13).

“Happily Ever After”: Does it Exist?

Today the song 'Payphone' by Maroon 5 came on the radio as I was driving. Of course since then I've had it stuck in my head . . . particularly the line, 'If ‘Ìâ‰âÂÌâèÏhappy ever after' did exist, I would still be holding you like this.'

This line annoys me. If I could say two things to Adam Levine (the lead singer) I would tell him . . .

Faithfulness: Why I Don’t Eat Cookies in Lent

I have refused sweets many times already this Lent. I don't refuse them because I'm scared of breaking a promise or afraid God will triple the calories for disobeying my Lenten commitment. I refuse the sweets because it's one of the things I decided to do for Lent. I'd rather take the seemingly sad situation as a chance to run to Jesus and unite my (puny) sufferings with His. I prefer to be moved and driven by love, not fear. Remember that we are the beloved. Notice that we word beloved breaks up into be-loved.

7 Catholic Dating Tips

Whether single or in a relationship, dating can be a wonderful, exciting, intimidating, and sometimes bizarre event. The stress of just figuring out what to wear can send you over the edge. Then there are all the other details. Who is paying? Where do we go? Do we show affection? How do I flirt? Or more importantly, how do we just survive those crippling embarrassing moments.

Relationship: The Answer to Jesus vs. Religion

I have to admit I'm a bit late on this one. I realize that the whole 'Jesus vs. Religion' showdown is sooooo last month, but I think it's worth taking another look at.

Who hasn't thought at one point or another about how great it would be to just have Jesus without all the rules and lists of things we're supposed to do? Why do we need all the rules? Why can't we just have Jesus without all the obligations? Sure, Jesus spoke often about the importance of following His commands (Luke 8:21) but why do we even need religion then? Why do we need labels and definitions? Why can't we just be close to Him and not worry about all the details?

What a Guy Really Wants in a Girl

In high school, I played football and ran for track and field. As a young man just coming into my faith, it was tough to see and hear the guys talk about women in a way that was so degrading. It forced me to question what the truth was. I was learning about God and His plan for us, but what the other guys were saying was completely contradictory to what God was saying.

I got to a point where I looked at what society was telling me would make me happy regarding women: sex, popularity and partying; and I asked myself, 'Is that it? Is this as good as it gets in life?'

There was something inside me that wasn't satisfied with that. There was a burning in my heart for so much more. I knew that God had greater plans.

Don’t Be Boring: Creative Date Ideas

Are you looking for some creative date ideas to do with a special someone this month? Valentines day is right around the corner and why not celebrate in a fun and creative way?

There is no reason why you cannot make this date the Best. Date. Ever.

Say “Goodbye” to boring because here are some ideas to help spark your imagination.

To Hook Up or Not To Hook Up?: Is it a Big Deal?

One night in high school, my ex-boyfriend's best friend called me up. He told me that he and his girlfriend, and my ex-boyfriend, were all hanging out, and that I should come over. From the tone in his voice and slight innuendo in his words, I knew what this meant.

My ex-boyfriend and I had played the 'friends with benefits' game before. Thus I wasn't surprised and actually felt a bit flattered that this popular, talented, good-looking guy would beckon me to him, even if we weren't still dating.

I excitedly rushed over to the best friend's house, greeted everyone, and proceeded to 'hang out' exclusively with my ex-boyfriend. I didn't see anything wrong with making-out with my ex-boyfriend, because after all, I wasn't having sex.

'Til Death Do Us Part?: Kim & Kris vs. Danny & Annie

If you’ve been “Keeping up with the Kardashians” you know that Kim is getting divorced. She and Kris Humphries have been married 72 days. I've done the math for you and it's not even three months! It leaves the question in my mind, 'Is true love possible? Is it real? Can two people stay together ‘Ìâ‰âÂÌâèÏtil death do us part'?' See for yourself. Take a look at this real couple, Danny and Annie, and their 27 year love story; and believe God has something amazing planned for your life. (Jeremiah 29:11)
