The Holiest Vocation
About three years ago, I went through a big conversion and in the course of a few months my faith grew exponentially and so much in my life changed. I was reading everything about the Church I could get my hands on, I prayed the rosary daily and I practically lived in the adoration chapel. I was in love with my faith and everyone around me knew it.
However, as wonderful as my renewed spiritual life was, I quickly began to freak out . . . being that holy obviously meant I was being called to be a nun, right? Read more [...]

One of the graces of Lent is that we're able to look past our immediate wants, desires, and temptations. When we have a proper perspective that focuses on God, our hearts are transformed to desire Him instead of earthly things.

Should We Date?
Yes, you need to date! Dating is an important part of discerning the kind of person you want to marry. How will you know what you’re looking for in a marriage partner if you don’t experience different kinds of people? I am NOT saying you should hooking up with everyone. I am saying you can’t expect your future spouse to show up on your doorstep and fall in love with you at first sight. All good things take effort.
If you’re at the place where you’re wondering whether or not you should begin a committed relationship with someone, here’s some advice I pulled from the recesses of my wisdom treasure trove.
I hope it’s helpful. I think it is . . . unless your goal is to date Harry Styles. I got nothin’ for you there. Good luck. Read more [...]

Lifelong Love
This is Don and Norma Jean. They've been married for 60 years.
I only talked with them for a few minutes but that was all it took for me to see how much they were in still in love. Couples like Don and Norma Jean prove to us that we aren't all doomed to broken hearts and broken marriages. True love exists; marriage is possible.

Why do Catholics Abstain from Meat on Fridays in Lent?
Picture it: You’re in a hurry. You’re focused on school or work or family or friends, where there are a thousand things going on. You stop “real quick” to eat in the middle of the day. Halfway through the meal - or a little while after - you remember it’s Friday. And it’s Lent! And that’s a burger in your stomach!! In the words of Homer Simpson, “D’oh!” Read more [...]

Wake Up Call
Lent is the Church’s ‘spiritual wake up call’ to us to prepare for Easter and to remind us that we need to die to ourselves. Dying to yourself means dying to your own selfish wants, pleasures, desires, etc., in order to better focus on what God wants for you in your life. Lent is a great time to re-prioritize.
“Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.” – Hebrews 13:16 Read more [...]

Why do Catholics put Ashes on our heads on Ash Wednesday?
“Excuse me, you’ve got some dirt on your head.” Every year someone says that to me on Ash Wednesday. Maybe it has happened to you too. In the past it used to frustrate me, but in recent years I have come to see it as a great opportunity to evangelize, to share with someone about the most important person in my life: Jesus Christ.

Give the Gift of Change: CRS Rice Bowls
Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving . . . that's what we're encouraged to do every Lent. As a teen, it's easy to make an excuse to get out of the almsgiving part. After all, you don't make a ton of money, and it's hard to find a charity that you're sure is legit and will use your donation for causes and/or organizations you can support as a faithful Catholic.
We have the perfect suggestion. If you can do something as simple as gather your spare change all throughout Lent, you could literally change someone's life. Read more [...]

The Pope’s Fearless Decision
Just as his predecessor Blessed Pope John Paul II had done with teaching us all how to die with dignity. Pope Benedict XVI has given the Church a new expression of fully living the Paschal Mystery – that of dying and rising with Christ. It is an amazing example of putting everyone else in front of you in line, so that all humanity can be served. This Pope’s decision was “fearless.”

Why Do We Have a Pope? Is it Biblical?
Each of the three was given a special role in the Church. Peter was the "rock" on which Jesus would build His Church (Matthew 16:18-19). As every group needs a leader, someone to cast the deciding vote, so did the apostles and the bishops. Simon Peter, the fisherman, rose to the occasion. In his line are popes who become saints and popes who were less than saintly; yet every pope was given special authority by God to guide the Church for a time.

Welcome to the Desert: Lent 2013
So here we are. Lent 2013. Another 40 days of no caffeine, cookies, soda, candy, the snooze button, Facebook/Twitter, gossip, video games, complaining, showing up late, secular music, texting, TV, or homework (just kidding . . . don't try it, it doesn't work).
There could be a lot of different motivations behind those sacrifices - like a desire to lose weight, or to get attention . . . but that’s not exactly what Lent is about. Read more [...]

Sin is real. And so is slavery to sin. That's why Lent is such a blessing from the Church. This season is a time when we can slowly turn back to God in order to fully celebrate Easter. Now is the time for sinners to become saints.

Pope Benedict XVI’s 2013 Lenten Message
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
The celebration of Lent, in the context of the Year of Faith, offers us a valuable opportunity to meditate on the relationship between faith and charity: between believing in God – the God of Jesus Christ – and love, which is the fruit of the Holy Spirit and which guides us on the path of devotion to God and others. The Best Idea for Your Lent
Every year since I’ve been a Catholic (five years and counting!), I’ve really loved coming up with different challenges for Lent. One year I gave up eating any meat, last year I read the bible for 30 minutes straight each day no matter what, you get the picture . . . Over the years I’ve come to realize that it’s not just how much we give up or what extra stuff we do, but it's about the quality of your sacrifice and what you decide to do.
How about giving up some of your time and using it for prayer? In fact, let me make the ultimate suggestion . . . Read more [...]

Finger Pointing Fatigue
What’s the point of judging a girl by her clothes anyway?
To change her mind and get her to change her clothes? The idea that you should run around and say “it has to come to this line and this line only” in order to be modest is such a legalistic approach and misses the whole point of the discussion about modesty. Since when do people - especially young people - respond well to being confined to a set of rules? It doesn’t work. No one wants to obey the ten commandments if they don’t have a relationship with God. And no one will listen to someone who only wants to tell them what they’re suggesting with how many inches of leg they’re showing. There’s something more going on.
Fulfilled, happy people don’t post suggestive photos of themselves on Facebook. Read more [...]
