What Do You Mean Jesus?

During one of my Desert Days I decided to not make my own plan for my prayers and Holy Hours but to ask God to lead me. I sat down in the chapel before the Blessed Sacrament and said to Jesus: “Okay, here I am, just tell me where to go”. And immediately I heard Jesus saying in my heart:  ”Ellen, you are My Beloved”. Instead of being happy with these nice words, I was mad and frustrated because I knew that Jesus loved me, so I wanted Him to say something new. But that’s not what happened… Jesus

Haiti: Praying from the Heart

We, the Covecrest missionaries had the opportunity to do a foreign mission in Haiti from Dec. 5th to Dec. 12th. We stayed at an orphanage called Kay Mari Manman Tout Timoun(Home of Mary, Mother of All Children). During our time there, we led a youth night on dignity and chastity for the village of Dandann.  We completed work projects that consisted of leveling their play yard and filling in the foundation for the village chapel that is under construction.  We visited poor families and we brought

Running With a Purpose

“Do you not know that the runners in the stadium all run in the race, but only one wins the prize? Run so as to win.” -1 Corinthians 9:24 In high school, I was a runner.  My main event was the 1600 meter (one mile) race.  My senior year in high school I quit the basketball team so that I could focus solely on improving my mile time with hopes of going to the State competition.  I would get up at 6am and head to the track before school to run my own training circuit, separate from the work outs

Not Enough Time In the Day

Back in Seattle 6 weeks ago , my heart was restless and it was hard to find peace. My day was spent in sections – time for God was at daily mass and a few random prayers throughout the day. The rest of the day was spent doing whatever I needed to get done. The problem was that I never asked God, “how should I spend my day today?” Sometimes after mass I said “Lord I give you this day” but I never reflected on what that meant or what he really wanted me to do. I took control of my schedule and did

Healing or Haiti?

Before Paul and I moved to Covecrest, a friend of ours named Jon, who had also been a Life Teen missionary, called Paul on the phone.  I overheard Jon telling Paul that he’s excited for us to be going to Covecrest and that he believed that I would receive healing that I needed while at Covecrest. When I heard that, I immediately got upset and thought “How dare he say I need healing?” Fast forward two months: We arrived at Covecrest and I was immediately overwhelmed with lots of questions running

Back to Basics

Over the last couple of years, I’ve really become a rosary pray-er. I used to pray it sporadically when I was in the car or when others were praying it, but for at least the past year or so, I’ve prayed it pretty much daily. I’ve always had a strong devotion to Mary, so I love going to her in prayer. One thing that always annoyed me, though, was having to pray the Apostles’ Creed at the beginning. Oftentimes, I would stumble over the exact wording of the Apostles’ versus the Nicene Creed

Come Together – Haiti Mission 2011!

Two weeks ago, I went on a mission trip to Haiti with thirteen other missionaries, most of whom I live with here at Covecrest. It was an incredibly blessed trip from start to finish! As I started writing this blog, I was listening to a song written by Michael W. Smith shortly after the earthquake last January. It’s called “Come Together Now,” and there are a few lines that really describe the great things God did during our week in Haiti… “Say a prayer that change will come…” We landed in Port

Stop, Drop and Pray

A few weeks ago, a couple of us were sitting around the kitchen table doing language homework. Our teacher was supposed to be arriving soon and we were getting some last minute practice in. She was running late and as we sat there, we began to wonder what was up. Then, we got a phone call; it was her–her dad had passed away. I asked her if there was anything we could do for her and she said, “Yes, pray for my mother.” It was so simple, yet, so beautiful. She was saying, “Yes, you can do something.”

Emma

Feeling the warm love of the people who have been interceding for me and our mission community for many months was what my heart needed to thaw from the snow that was falling on the cold streets of Holland. As I entered the chapel in the Church of St. Tomas in Roermond, I saw pews filled with our prayer warriors that I had never met before. It was the first time that I got to receive the Eucharist with those who were committed to praying for me here for such a long period of time.   After Mass,

Holiness is Accessible

Yesterday we were graced to be able to lead a Day of Reflection for the Core Team of an Atlanta area parish. Honestly, I think our mission community did nothing all day…
