More than A Song!

In the fall of 2005 I was a senior in high school and involved with FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) at my school. We would meet once a month in our auditorium for about 45 minutes. I still remember that at these meetings is where I truly learned how to pray with music. I remember “Tell the World” by Hillsong was the first song that I really recognized I was praying rather than singing. I had been on plenty of retreats and conferences throughout high school before I started going to these meetings,

Word on the Street

Driving down the street in a twelve-passenger van, all of a sudden it skids to a stop and a couple of guys jump out and start talking about Jesus! They walk down the street and into random stores and start asking cashiers and employees about their faith life. The first thing one of the cashiers said to them is “y’all are crazy!” And laughed in their faces. Oh… and did I forget to tell you? One of those guys was me. As part of my formation, I paired up with one of my brothers here in community

God Speaks Clearly

God speaks clearly. Does He really? Just last night I had a conversation with one of my missionary sisters about this. We talked about how sometimes we wish that God would just speak more clearly: that He would tell us exactly what He wants of us, what He’s calling us to, and what He has planned for us. We know that there are many ways that God does show us these things, but sometimes it doesn’t seem very clear. Honestly, maybe it’s more common that we just aren’t listening. The reality

Prayers of Insanity?

What’s insane? Missionaries. For the past month some of the male missionaries at Covecrest have been getting up early and working out with a program called Insanity. Now, when I say early I mean 5 in the morning. For a guy straight from the west coast who was used to getting home at that time, that in itself was insane.  5 in the morning everyday hearing Shaun T talk about digging deeper and not quitting. I’d be in that room working my butt off with a few other guys jumping and running around

Praying with Coffee

I enjoy a good cup of coffee – even though it’s more like milk with coffee. Every morning, I wake up at 6:30am and start that coffee maker! There’s a “mysterious” ingredient in coffee that gives me the energy I need to get through my day without falling asleep during prayer or even getting tired. Sometimes I come back for a second cup… Okay, I always come back for another cup. There’s just something about coffee that I can’t resist having. I grab my prayer bag, rosary, and of course,

I Was Bullied.

2012-09_LT-Bullied

I know the wounds can be deep; trust me, I’ve been there.

I spent six years of my life terrified to walk into school. I spent six years trying to figure out what to wear, how to act, what to do in order for the bullying to stop. I started hanging out with the “cool kids,” but it only got worse, so I joined the sport teams and clubs, and that didn’t help, so I decided to just give up.

Pray with Boldness

“Lord, break my heart for what breaks Yours.” Praying boldly is hard knowing that you might be led somewhere out of your control and to places you didn’t expect or feel like going. Saying, ”I will go wherever you send me” or “I surrender” takes a lot of courage. I still have a hard time boldly praying these prayers. If we really want to give it all, that is what we are called to do in the Christian life. So slowly, I have begun to pray, ”Humble me so that others might be exalted” and “I surrender”

Saint in the Making

Since our baptism, we were meant to be saints in the kingdom of heaven. I have been reflecting about people making comments on wanting to become saints. How does one become a saint? To become a saint, one must live a life of holiness. Many perceive that holiness is reserved only for priests and those in religious life. This is not true. No matter what vocation (single, married, or religious), we are called to live a life of holiness because Jesus Christ himself is holy. “Like obedient children,

Why So Quiet?

At the beginning of January, all of the first year missionaries went on an eight-day silent retreat. This retreat was very challenging for me, but God moved in ways that I would’ve never expected Him to. I realized how much humor God and I have in our relationship, whether it was through contemplations on scriptures or playing catch by myself out at the wiffle ball field. He hit me upside the head with a baseball bat – not literally, but He made me realize how I had been shying away from all the

Pray Without Ceasing

After 3 hours of laying sod in 40 degree weather, I was more than ready for a hot shower. As I was walking back to my cabin, I realized I still needed to pray my daily rosary. I knew I wouldn’t have any time later that evening, so I decided to pray while I cleaned up from work projects and prepared for dinner. It was a profound time of prayer. I prayed the first decade of the Luminous Mysteries, the Baptism of Jesus, while showering. As the hot water thawed out my freezing fingers and toes and
