God Speaks Clearly

God speaks clearly. Does He really? Just last night I had a conversation with one of my missionary sisters about this. We talked about how sometimes we wish that God would just speak more clearly: that He would tell us exactly what He wants of us, what He's calling us to, and what He has planned for us. We know that there are many ways that God does show us these things, but sometimes it doesn't seem very clear. Honestly, maybe it's more common that we just aren't listening. The reality

Clinging to Jesus

Being a missionary is hard. Actually, just being a Christian is hard. I feel like I should understand that by now. But even though I have been following the Lord for a little while, I am still surprised when struggles come along. I think, “Why, Lord? When will this end? Is it ever going to be easy?” Today, I was in the chapel praying and having a moment with Jesus. It was one of those “Is this ever going to end?” moments. “Why is there struggle after struggle? It seems that the moment

I am still here!

That's what Jesus said to me in the half empty church on Christmas Morning. "I am still here!" It was great to be back at home in The Netherlands for Christmas break. But it was hard to see the church being so empty during the only Mass on Christmas morning. Heartbreaking to realize that the Church I love so much is struggling. Painful to see that people from the country that's so dear to my heart don't realize how beautiful it is to give Jesus a central place in Christmas. Seeing that people

Don’t touch me!

Last year I stumbled across a YouTube video that perfectly summarized my relationship with God at that time. Before I go on, I’ll let you watch it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKhZzGR5tYU&list=UUj1v8ICk46ras8v1pchqzIA&index=9 Everything about this video was a perfect symbolism of my relationship with Christ! I was that little girl who didn’t want to be touched and Jesus was Max. Even the father in the video perfectly personified God the Father. When I first began my mission year

Why You Should Pray Scripture Every Day

For some reason, when I started Middle School I decided to try out for the basketball team.  I was horrible at basketball.  I tried out in 7th and 8th grade with no success. As a Freshman in High School, I continued my pursuit of a basketball career.  Finally, I made the team, but it wasn’t because of my skill, it was because I worked the hardest in conditioning and wanted to be on the team more than anybody.  The coach saw something special in me and gave me the last spot on the team. How

Am I Jen or Peter?

On my 8-day silent retreat I focused on diving deep into the gospels using all my senses and interacting with Jesus. Since I obviously had a lot of time set aside to pray I was able to slowly dive into many of the stories and bring them to life. I couldn’t help but connect with Peter and how much Peter longed to be near to Jesus. The relationship between Peter and Jesus touched my heart so deeply that at times I was living the gospel as Peter. It was an amazing way to learn about Christ on a whole

Blown Away!

It's the 18th week of our mission in Haiti and still I am in awe of the Lord's faithfulness. He promised that he would send us on mission to Haiti and he did. He promised us community and we are surrounded by families, priests, and parishes that love us. He ensured us that he would provide spiritually and physically. We live with a priest, so the sacraments are available to us daily, and we have never gone without (maybe no running water or power for a few days but he always made a way). Plus, the

I LOVE ONE DIRECTION!

Do you ever find yourself saying things like this? Ok, maybe you don’t. Maybe it’s more like: -       I love my new iPhone 5 or iPad or -       I love Call of Duty or -       I love the new Taylor Swift album or -       I love Chick-fil-A or -       I love Starbucks or -       I love hunting and fishing or -       I love to dance I mean, you can fill in the blank, but most, if not all, of us at some point or another have publicly

Your Call of Duty: To Be Fearless

2013-01_LT-CallofDuty

Now, this is a challenge! This is a battle that will determine if you are a man or not. Put your controllers down when you enter the world, your schools, your jobs, your friend's house, the store. You are in a battlefield. A battle for each and every life that you see. You can't see your enemies, but you can see what's at stake. We do face "impossible odds" where everything will be fighting against us. Hordes of media and countless lies will be thrown at you to derail you. This isn't a life for just anyone, this is the life of a real hero.

Singing Jesus Lullabies

We had our 8 day silent retreat the beginning of January and God spoke so clearly and directly to my heart. It was an incredible opportunity to give God everything for 8 days of silence and solitude. Who are you going to talk to but God? We used the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises, following the life of Jesus and placing ourselves by His side at some of the most important moments of His life, ministry and passion. One of my first meditations was on the birth of Jesus. As I imagined Mary holding
