As missionaries, we often talk about the Scripture verse Acts 4:20:
“It is impossible for us not to speak about what we have seen and heard.”
The Apostles said this boldly as the rulers and elders told them not to speak or teach about Jesus. They were confident about who Jesus was and all God had done, and it was too good to keep it to themselves! They would not be silent!
This summer, I am serving at Life Teen’s middle school (Edge) summer camp in Hiawassee, Georgia. At first I wasn’t sure why God called me to leave Houston and the mission there to serve at camp, but He has really blown me away in all that He has done in the last ten weeks! Lately, I have found myself saying similar things to the Apostles’ words as I’m in awe of all the ways I see God moving each day. I can’t help but talk about what I have seen and heard!
Here are a few stories of ways that God has been working:
- Many teens have shared that Mass was their favorite part of a given day and that the week helped them to understand the Mass better so that they could enter in and participate more fully. I love hearing that because I know that when we go to Mass at least once a week all our life, it can easily become repetitious and lack meaning for us.
- A dad (chaperone) went to the sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time in over 30 years! What a great example of God’s unconditional mercy and forgiveness!
- The joy of middle schoolers is infectious! They LOVE life, whether it’s the food, hiking, prayer, or simply playing in the creek that runs throughout the camp. The joy of the youth, as well as the joy of the other missionaries I’m serving with, has definitely overflowed to make me more joyful this summer!
- A teen shared towards the end of the week that she hadn’t been sure that God existed, but that in prayer she had felt Christ and now believes without a doubt that He is real! Thank you, Jesus, for working in her life and her heart!
God is changing lives, and it is such a gift to be able to witness that and be a small part of the transformations as I serve God on His mission!
What has God done in your life this year? How have you seen Him today or this week? I challenge you to think about those things and share them with at least one friend today. God is constantly working; don’t keep His good works to yourself!
