Since our baptism, we were meant to be saints in the kingdom of heaven. I have been reflecting about people making comments on wanting to become saints. How does one become a saint? To become a saint, one must live a life of holiness. Many perceive that holiness is reserved only for priests and those in religious life. This is not true. No matter what vocation (single, married, or religious), we are called to live a life of holiness because Jesus Christ himself is holy.
“Like obedient children, do not act in compliance with the desires of your former ignorance but, as he who called you is holy; be holy yourselves in every aspect of your conduct, for it is written, “Be holy because I am holy.” – 1 Peter 1:14-16
As children of God, we are meant to be holy. God the Father sent His only Son not just to redeem us, but also to show us the way to live a life of holiness. So how do we live a life of holiness? Beside prayer and loving others whole-heartedly, Scripture would be one of the best places to start because it contains the witness of how Jesus Christ lived a life of holiness. Reading scripture and reflecting on it helps us to imitate Christ’s actions.
I usually ask the Holy Spirit to help me to open my mind and inspire my heart before I read any Scripture passage. I wrote a song called “Come Holy Spirit Come (Inspire My Heart)” to help me enter into the state of prayer that would allow my mind and heart to be receptive to the word of truth. I encourage you to read the Bible as part of your prayer, so that your mind and heart can imitate the life of Christ’s holiness. From there, we can live a holy life as Christ has called us to.
