Ignorance of Christ

As I mentioned before, part of our outreach to the local community is running the youth groups at the two local parishes: St. Helena’s and St. Mark’s. When the missionaries returned from Christmas break, we had to create the schedule of topics for St. Mark’s youth group: every Sunday night from January through April. After realizing that many of the teens haven’t spent much time reading the Bible and/or don’t know a whole lot about the history of our faith, we decided to spend most of the semester focusing on Scripture.

The more I think about the semester, the more excited I get! St. Jerome once said:

“Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.”

If we don’t know about Christ’s life, about His family, or about where He came from, how much could we really know about Him? If we don’t know about things God has said or done in the past, how much do we really know about who He is in our lives today?

I’ve read a decent amount of Scripture, especially through my four years in college, but it didn’t always mean very much to me personally. Thinking about going through salvation history with the teens reminds me how much more I can still learn! God teaches us so much about Himself: in everything He says to His people in Scripture, and in everything He does. He created mankind, provided for His people, guided them, loved them unconditionally, protected them, led them out of suffering, blessed them, and SO much more! And He does all of those things for us today, too! The Bible teaches us about God and His relationships with His people, and reading Scripture definitely helps me to see more clearly the ways that He is alive and moving in my own life.

Our God is so great, and I can’t wait to get to know Him better by diving more into Scripture alongside the teens this semester!
