The God of Sticky Notes

Two weeks ago, I woke up to no less than nine sticky notes posted in the bathroom. Each of them, brightly colored, framed the mirror above my sink.

It took me a moment to realize they were even there (I am not a morning person) and another couple of minutes to take in the messages of each scribbled note.

They were simple, beautiful, and affirming notes. They said things like:

My favorite Emily smile is when you smile so big your eyes get super squinty. It’s the best!

You are beautiful, inside and out.

But the last note stuck out me (pun intended) the most was inconspicuously on the right side of the mirror:

I love you.

All the other sticky notes, all the other all the affirmations, and the fact that I even had sticky notes all over my mirror boiled down to this reality: I was loved.

My roommate had gotten up early that Monday morning and adjusted her usual routine just so she could leave these messages for me. She placed them somewhere she hoped I would see them.

But there was no guarantee that I would notice them. (Again, I am not a morning person, so there was a real possibility I would have missed them in my morning stupor.)

And even if I did notice them, there was a chance I could have thrown them in the trash, not realizing the notes were for me.

But she took the risk anyway.

I think that’s how God is, too. He love me so much that everyday He plans out little ways to show He loves me.

Some days I wake up, look out my window, and see that it’s snowing. (I love snow, so that’s a big deal for me.)

Other days as I’m driving, I see a sunset that takes my breath away.

Or I get a card from a friend I’ve been missing. Or I read a passage in Scripture that speaks directly to what’s going on in my life. Or donuts show up in my office the day I didn’t bring pack breakfast.

Those are all love notes from God.

He sticks reminders of His love for me in the places I go everyday, with no guarantee that I will notice them or recognize that they are notes from Him.

The morning I found the sticky notes, I immediately knew they were from my roommate. And I was so excited to see them on the mirror that I spent most of my morning reading and re-reading them, tweeting about them, and posting them on Instagram that I barely had time to brush my teeth, or wash my face.

But I can’t say I’m always that excited when I get sticky notes from God.

I can’t say I even notice them most of the time. Or if I do notice them, that I am so happy that I tweet about them, or post them on instagram, or even write them in my journal. Most of the time, I don’t even say thanks to God in prayer.

So that’s my Lenten resolution this year. I’m going to take five minutes at the end of every day and list 10 sticky notes God left for me that day, 10 ways God showed me He loved me. And then I will tell Him thank you. And let’s be honest… I’ll probably tweet about it, too.

Want to join me?

This Lent, let’s all be on the look out for #GodsLovenotes. Instagram it, tweet it, and be grateful we have a God who sends us sticky notes to remind us how much He loves us.
