Take the Plunge The Sacrament of Baptism About this Life Night This Life Night has been intentionally designed to provide a basic understanding of the Sacrament of Baptism for teenagers that may not have a firm theological understanding of the sacrament. If your group needs a deeper teaching, please see the “Going Deeper” section at the end of this Life Night for suggestions. The Gather for this Life Night requires some advance preparation and challenges pairs of teens to find the baptismal formula hidden inside water balloons. The Gather game transitions into a large group brainstorm about what teenagers already know, or think they know, about the Sacrament of Baptism. The teaching for this Life Night is presented as a skit, so it must be well rehearsed prior to the Life Night. During the Break, teenagers discuss the Sacrament of Baptism and the impact it has on their faith. The Send of the Life Night challenges teens to reflect on God’s love for them and to remember their baptism. Teens receive a small card to remind them that they are loved by God as adopted sons and daughters. Goal of This Night The goal of this Life Night is to provide teenagers with a basic understanding of the Sacrament of Baptism, its importance to our faith in Christ, and to challenge teenagers to remember their baptism as an affirmation of God’s love for them. Without it we cannot receive the other sacraments. As followers of Jesus we imitate Christ’s very own baptism that he partook in not for his own sake but for ours. Baptism is the channel by which our connection with God is reestablished. Through our baptism, we have the grace and the call to help bring others into the mysterious yet significant effects of baptism in the Trinity.
