Job Type: Full-Time Position
Location: Abbeville, LA
Is God calling you to something radical? Over 2,000 years ago, Jesus sent his disciples out as missionaries to the ends of the earth telling them that: “the harvest is plenty, but laborers are few.” Today, His words as urgent as they have ever been. At Family Missions Company, we are lay, Catholic, missionary families and singles engaged in proclaiming the Gospel and serving the poor in foreign lands. The full time missionaries make a minimum two-year commitment, beginning with Intake, three months of training and formation at our mission base in Louisiana, and continuing with mission service at a designated mission post. Our missionaries’ first year of formation consists of: Intake, 3 months of training at our Big Woods mission in Louisiana (including a 3 week outreach to Mexico), followed by 9 months of missionary life in the field. Missionaries undergoing formation enter fully into FMC’s community life: living a simple life in humble accommodations, sharing meals in common, and serving one another. Intake is a time of intense study, work, prayer and community life. Missionaries undergoing formation enter fully into FMC’s community life: living a simple life in humble accommodations, sharing meals in common, and serving one another.
Those interested in full-time missions must attend a “Come and See.” We schedule a few four-day “Come and See” visits a year at our base in Abbeville, Louisiana. These provide an opportunity for you to meet our missionary community before making a commitment to join Intake. Training begins in September and finishes in December and we try to send our missionaries out as close to January 1st as possible.
Family Missions Company, founded in 1997, is a lay Catholic apostolate dedicated to proclaiming the Gospel to all creation, even to the ends of the earth. Our missionary vocation is rooted in Jesus’ Great Commission and confirmed in the teachings of the Church. The ministry of FMC is born out of Frank and Genie Summers’ own missionary journey, and the decades of their experience preaching the Gospel and serving the poor here and around the world. Our missionaries come from diverse places and backgrounds; bringing diverse perspectives, talents and charisms. As Catholic laity, formed by the teaching of the Church Magisterium, we always work in concert with the pastors where we serve. We live on God’s providence and depend totally on the prayers and financial sacrifices of our benefactors.
