Last week I had the pleasure of interviewing Rick Santorum, a Catholic politician running for President of the United States. While Catholics have successfully and faithfully served in all areas of society, the office of President has only been occupied by one Catholic, John F. Kennedy.
The United States is built upon a foundation of freedom that comes from the people who vote for their leaders. Voting is not just something that we passively do. It is a right that people have died for. It is the way we shape and form our lives in community. Government does not solve every problem, but we shape and form a better world by just laws that help protect the dignity of all human life.
Our interview with Rick Santorum is not an endorsement of him or his campaign. We were afforded an interview because of a previous relationship with someone on his campaign. If we had the opportunity to interview another presidential candidate, we would do so.
We also did not seek to discuss in-depth policy decision. There’s plenty of information “out there” about each candidates policies. Our hope was to get to know the Catholic man Rick Santorum and how his faith shapes his views.
We encourage you to look at all of the policies of each of the candidates as well as the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops website about how to responsibly vote.
This election is incredibly important. Our generation has an opportunity to give voice to the issues that matter most in our world, including supporting the dignity of all human life, working towards a peaceful world, lifting up the oppressed and poor, promoting true moral law, and seeking a just economy.
