Never Say Never

(Greg may have lost his voice cheering during his screening of ‘Never Say Never,’ so this week he turned in a written review. Okay, not really )

The word “awkward” gets tossed around a lot these days, but a great real-world definition would be my screening of Justin Bieber’s new movie ‘Never Say Never.’ Not because of the movie: because of the audience. The crowd screening the film was full of dads and their teenage daughters… and me, a mid-twenties man sitting by himself.

‘Never Say Never’ works as a half-biography, half-concert movie, as Bieber prepares for his biggest show ever: a sold-out Madison Square Garden. We learn all about Bieber’s life… from his musical talent as a two-year old to how he ended up signing with Usher (who also produced Never Say Never). Interspersed with home videos and interviews are big-budget 3D clips from Justin’s concert… complete with backup dancers, explosions, and thousands of screaming pre-teen girls.

There’s really not much I can say about Never Say Never that you don’t already know. It works for what it is, and if you’re at least neutral to Bieber Fever you’ll probably enjoy it. The one surprise to me was the Christian background that JB grew up in… when he was singing on street corners as a kid, it turns out a few of those were praise and worship songs. So whether you’ve camped out for weeks to see him onscreen or it ranks lower on your list than watching paint dry, throw up a prayer for the newest little pop star. We all know he’s gonna need it.

“…it’s pretty clear about fifteen minutes in that the movie’s going to follow the story arc of a Christian drama. Not like ‘TNT Knows Drama’ drama, but the kind you see onstage at a youth conference. Movies that are ‘Christian’ a lot of times stay on the safe side – but To Save A Life gets closer to reality than most as it deals with teen suicide, teen pregnancy, and even cutting. It’s a little long and a little predictable, but as far as church movies go, it’s not half bad.”

There are a lot of people – Catholic and secular – who are trying to turn Inception into some sort of philosophical storytelling opus, as if its messages were meant to be unfolded and discussed for generations. I beg to differ. The reason some people didn’t “get” Inception is because there’s not some immense secret to get.

Inception could very possibly be the movie of the year, and it’s flat out owned the summer season. It’s a must-see, as rare as those movies are… but trying to mine it for a message on reality is like saying Terminator 2 was really a dissertation on the evils of technology. Instead, Inception is what action movies should be: a smart, well-acted story in an arrestingly beautiful and immersive world that keeps you locked in from the opening shot to the end credits.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

With that being said, Scott Pilgrim VS The World still has less skin than a Katy Perry video… a three and a half minute Katy Perry video. It’s a fun and original film that’s incredibly aware of its audience – nerds.”

Whether you’re from the class of ’01 or ’10, you probably grew up with a love of the Toy Story movies. Woody, Buzz, and the gang of secretly living playthings filled our childhoods with adventures and imagination. It was one of the launching pads for Pixar, and the first 3D animation experience for a lot of us.

Toy Story 3 is kid-appropriate, but it honestly feels like a movie made for people in our generation – a way to say goodbye to the characters we’ve known for the last fifteen years. And so even though it’s not quite as good as the first two, it’s a nice end to the story. Click below for the full review.
