I love people watching. One result of this is that I have witnessed many people snap quick selfies in various (and sometimes awkward places)… the park, in the middle of the mall, at the airport, walking through the door, taking a walk, in the car, and yes- even in the bathroom. I’m not sure where […]
hen comes the worst part, when they show the faces of the losers. The faces of those who missed finishing third by mere hundredths of a second or whose artistic interpretation earned them a score that left them in fifth place. Frozen tears running down their cheeks, I often find myself crying along on the couch, not because of the medal they missed out on that day, but of all the moments in life they’d missed to bring them to that point.
The selections below may seem like an odd collection (they are!), but that’s partly because it’s so hard to find romantic movies that are actually romantic and don’t simply involve people jumping into bed with each other (definitely not true love). Many rom-coms are neither romantic nor funny. And, seriously, how many times can you watch “A Walk To Remember”? I also tried to include movies guys would like.
With all the fame you’d think Gabby would be too-cool-for-everything. But she’s an incredibly down to earth, God-loving, young woman who’s not that different from you (or mostly me I guess… she loves listening to T-Swift and eating Chick-Fil-A which are two of my favorite pastimes).
Since her movie just came out, she had some time to answer some questions about her life, how she’s gotten through trials, and what she hopes you take away from the movie. Check it out below!
“I don’t want to date her I just want to fool around…”
“I’m not looking for a relationship, I hope we can just be friends with benefits…”
Many of us have heard these words from peers all too many times. Sadly, the culture’s message about the body seems to support these thoughts by portraying men as caring about women’s bodies, but not anything else.
For a lot of people, Valentine’s Day is all about the “me.” What are people going to give me? Who’s going to text me? Oh, poor me, I’m not in a relationship, no one loves me, and no one will be showering me in chocolates, flowers, and mushy love notes. Me, me, me…
But when was that ever fulfilling?
This may lead to what I would like to call Insta-jealousy. This diagnosis includes (but is not limited to) jealousy of possessions, jealousy of relationships, poor self-image, self-doubt, loneliness, discontent, sadness, extreme longing, self-pity, and the occasional runny nose.
Swaddled tightly beneath a star-blanketed Bethlehem sky, God breathed gently yet powerfully. The acceptable time had come. The prophecies were now — at last — fulfilled. The Creator had invaded His creation on a mission of love and for the next three decades, peace and joy would be breathed and received in tangible new ways. […]
Ready or not, here it comes… It’s almost 2014.
I don’t know about you, but this year for me has been a year of challenge, change, and growth with a ton of added mercy and grace. Looking back at the challenges, I am grateful; grateful that the Lord allows me to grow when I suffer and grateful that He never stops loving me.
It’s the Christmas season and that means carols, cookies, and remembering which week you light the pink advent candle. It also means family get-togethers and the inevitable gauntlet of questions and comments like: “My nephew got accepted to Harvard. Where are you going to college?” “I can’t believe your parents let you cut your hair […]
If you are unaware, this show is a major event among girls all over the world. Girls throw parties to watch together and social media blows up over the event. Girls claim it makes them feel “girly” and love to get in the spirit of the show. But this show is not exactly known for the product it is “selling” – it is known for something very different – its effect on the self-esteem of young women everywhere.
The word ‘eucharist’ means ‘thanksgiving’ in Greek; did you know that? It’s a meal that we come to, and I hope you come grateful. Not only grateful that He picks you, but grateful that He feeds you. And that meal is one of the ways He stays with us, always. Because as often as we come to the Eucharist, He comes to us.
We think a lot about war these days. Turn on the national news, it’s constant – this country is invading that country, someone committed a war crime, the tensions are rising between two other countries. It never seems to end. Somehow, we’ve got ourselves into a crazy mess – and, sadly this has basically been the situation since civilization began.
Halloween is quickly approaching, and while most of us will take this opportunity to get creative and eat our weight in candy, we all know that we live in a world where ‘costume contest’ often translates to ‘how little clothing can I get away with?’
In our culture, the object is often to ‘look hot’ on Halloween – which is pretty ironic, since a lingerie-plus-bunny/cat/mouse ears combination usually leaves a girl freezing.
Last year I drove past the local mall and was surprised to see what appeared to be a giant tapestry hanging between two construction cranes. I’m talking several stories high. Curious, I took a closer look and was appalled to realize it was actually ladies underwear. Hundreds and hundreds of bras, hooked together and strung […]
Because it’s Facebook. What did you expect from a website anyway . . . hugs and free chicken fingers? From someone who’s on Facebook pretty much all the time (except when I’m in church) I feel like I have the right to say with great conviction that Facebook is actually our frenemy. Explanation to follow. […]
In this troubling time in our world, many of us are longing for someone to turn to . . . someone to calm us down, speak some truth, and point us in the right direction. With the increasing conflict in Syria, many innocent lives have been lost and it is truly heartbreaking. Nations around the […]
I’ve heard the name “Blurred Lines” thrown around lately, and seeing that it has topped Billboard charts for a while, I looked it up and, unfortunately, listened to it. It does have an extremely catchy beat, and made me want to bust a move right there in my room. But, then I read the lyrics […]
The other day I was driving in my car and a song came on the radio. This song was by a very well known pop artist who has published a lot of music that we really could debate the moral content of all day. I went to turn the song off, wondering if it would […]
Music can have a very powerful effect in people's lives, and the words of a song really matter. Music is a universal language that cuts to the heart in a way that nothing else can. Macklemore makes some bold claims in “Same Love.” And because it fits snugly within the pop culture views currently trending (making the Catholic Church look outdated and hateful while those that support gay marriage are more loving and accepting) and is very catchy and well done, it has struck a chord with millions of people. However, just because something is emotionally stirring that doesn't mean that it’s truthful. The song is built on a foundation of emotion instead of the rock of truth.
