Shark Week Scares

It’s finally here. The week that the Discovery Channel brings us marathon programming meant to help us better understand sharks. As I write this, a great white shark the size of a Winnebago is chomping a seal in half while guys in windbreakers film on a rocking boat. My favorite part of shark week is […]

You Are Wanted

As I listened to this song I often picture myself dramatically belting the chorus into a microphone as a country singer star. While, in all actuality, I am just sitting at my desk bobbing my head and swaying to the music (desks are rather inhibiting to any other type of dancing). But as I sat and desk danced I started to think about how much this song cuts to the heart of most girls.

My Love/Hate Relationship with Pom Poms

I'm definitely going to pull a Jekyll vs. Hyde . . . Beyonce vs. Sasha Fierce right now. What can I say? The Jonas Brothers have that effect on me; our relationship is tumultuous.

Gosnell Shattered My Pro-Life Passivity

If you haven't heard about Kermit Gosnell, I'd like to fill you in. After reading the entire grand jury report on his trial, it is undoubtedly something that needs to be discussed. When I first started following his story, I spent a lot of time in tears of rage and thinking this case is so terrible it had to be made up. I want to preface this post by warning that this story is graphic in nature, but I believe it's an ugly truth that we should not shy away from.

Kermit Gosnell is currently on trial for 8 counts of murder – one count for a poor immigrant woman and seven counts for newborn babies.

A Father Like Francis

I needed Pope Francis.

And not only because I'm part of the Catholic Church and we were without a shepherd . . . I mean I needed him because I'm sinful, and broken, and I need a constant reminder of how to be like Christ.

I have been awestruck by him from the first moment he walked out onto the balcony, to the last news article I read about him.

Where Have You Been?

We, like the Samaritan woman, continually ask God, 'Where have you been?' or 'Where were you?' when relationships or life don't go the way we planned.

The thing is God never asks us, 'Where have you been' because He knows where we've been. He knows the websites, the parties, the rooms we have entered, and the bottles we have opened to satisfy our thirst. He knows the relationships we have been in and the lines we have crossed emotionally, physically, and sexually. And yet, He sits at the wall of the well waiting for us to discover Him and accept His mercy and love.

“Still Lolo”: A Story About Fashion, Faith, and Fear

In 2011 Lauren 'Lolo' Scruggs was living the life any 23-year-old young woman would dream of. She had recently graduated college and had interned at Michael Kors’ studio and the costume department of Gossip Girl. She had reported on Fashion Week in New York, Paris, and Montreal and her online magazine LOLO Magazine was generating lots of industry buzz.

Then, on December 3, 2011, Lauren was hit by the propeller blade of a small airplane and her life was turned upside down. The propeller grazed her skull and left eye and cut off her left hand. She was rushed to the hospital where her parents and twin sister anxiously waited with a room full of friends to hear if Lauren would recover.

Justice and Mercy: A Reflection on Les Miserables

If you've recently seen Les Miserables, you're probably still unpacking the impact this movie has made on you. If you haven't seen it, or aren't familiar with the story, it's focuses on one man's conversion and how an experience of God's mercy can change a person's life. It's a pretty epic story … I highly recommend it

When Heroes Fail

If you're anything like me, you've become pretty disenchanted with many so-called 'heroes' and 'leaders' in our world. The cheating, lies, deceit, and more have invaded my television to the point where I barely turn it on any more.

A few years ago, it was the scandal of Tiger Woods.

Just this past week, we've been bombarded with the confession of Lance Armstrong taking Performance Enhancing Drugs and whatever the heck is going on with Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o.

Rejoice?: The Aftermath of a School Shooting

It was Gaudete Sunday and as the third candle of the Advent Wreath was lit at Mass we were called to rejoice, but my heart didn't really feel like rejoicing. A prayer intention for the victims and their families and what seemed to be a small mention of Friday's heartbreak during the homily didn't seem enough to express what so many of our hearts were feeling.

How can we rejoice, God?

In the midst of all of this pain and hurt how can we rejoice today, this week, or on Christmas morning?

Mayan Mayhem: Are We Gonna Die Young?

Christ Himself told us that nobody knows the day or the hour that He will return to judge the living and dead on earth. Not the Mayans, not a television preacher, and certainly not Ke$ha. This means that tomorrow Christ could show up. Would your soul be ready, or would you wish you had more time? The truth about 'living like you are going to die young,' is that we should be living like today is our last day, but realizing that there is eternal life after death. We should be making the most of our lives today … but not through sin, but virtue.

Long Island Medium: Ghosts, God, and the Church

The show takes a look at Theresa's life as she tries to balance family relationships with her daytime job as a medium, someone who can communicate with the spirit world. She believes that she can communicate with people who have died, so clients come to her looking for closure and answers as they hope to hear from those who have passed away.

It sounds harmless enough. After all, she's just offering help and consolation to people who are still mourning the loss of loved ones, right? What does the Catholic Church say about channeling spirits or communicating with the dead?

Election Aftermath

It got old watching TV ads about why 'Politician A' is so awful and why 'Politician B' is practically a canonized saint.

I got sick of opening my mailbox only to throw away multiple print ads everyday.

I got tired of the mud-slinging, name-calling, and lying that seems to spread through every election I've voted in.

Finally it's over! I can get back to my normal life, and my friends can get back to posting more pointless memes on Facebook.

Goodbye Victoria’s Secret: An Interview with Kylie Bisutti

She had her dream job . . . and she was only 19. Kylie beat out 10,000 other women when she won the Victoria’s Secret Model Search back in 2009. She travelled the world modeling lingerie as a Victoria’s Secret Angel but Kylie realized it wasn’t everything she had hoped it would be, especially as a married woman. So last Spring she said “peace out Victoria’s Secret!”

Everything I Know About Love I Learned From Taylor Swift

If you haven't listened to T-Swift's new album Red, go clear your schedule and come back to this blog later. My words will be empty and boring if you aren't hearing the refrain of 'All too well' or 'Treacherous' on repeat in your head.

If you have been listening to her album, courtesy of iTunes, Target, a Papa John's Pizza, or a YouTube playlist, then we are definitely friends. (If you participated in any sort of countdown to Red, you're instantly elevated to best friend status.)

Miss Swift's album is about more love and heartbreak than I've ever experienced. Like, ever.
