Go Ahead, Shatter Me

… I felt it slipping but didn’t know what to do. The ornate, china plate fell to the tile floor.

You know that split second of silence after something shatters on the ground? It’s in that split second that I caught my breath in shock waiting for the reprimand, gasp or look of disapproval. And in that moment, my grandma had a choice.

She would always, no matter what was broken, say something to the effect of: “That’s ok! Don’t worry!” Immediately, that’s what she said to me. No hesitation. I remember asking her about it later and having her tell me, “What’s done is done and it’s no use being upset over.”

Incomplete Without the Eucharist

I went with Katie the next week … and then again the following week. That piece of bread had the attention of a whole auditorium of people, it had to mean something. Unknowingly I followed her to a moment with Christ that would change my life. Before Adoration, the priest described what we were about to encounter. While I was sitting there, for the first time in my life I allowed myself to be found by God. And for the first time told him where I was. I heard him speaking in His quiet voice, “Stop looking. You are home”.

"I Have a Question!": Waiting for God's Answers

Growing up, I was the typical nerd. I was always the student in class who would raise their hand saying, “I have a question … ” (I learned quickly not to stand up, wave my hands, and yell … thanks to first grade.) I just loved asking all types of questions. I still do.

Will Kickball Make You a Saint?

Kickball was a huge deal in my neighborhood. My house was the one with the large, nicely mowed field (thanks dad) and so the kickball games always happened there. We would play until it was too dark to see the ball and the mosquitoes too unbearable. It was really fun but kind of stressful too.

I remember when all that mattered to me was being able to kick that yellow rubber ball past the tree line and be the fastest to sprint around the bases. It sounds bad, but I didn’t care about the important things like getting to heaven and becoming a saint. All I wanted was to be the best at kickball and I felt like if I wasn’t, my friends would think less of me or not want me around.

"Nothing Will Separate Us": 10 Years After 9/11 With Donna Killoughey Bird

On this the 10th anniversary of 9/11, we wanted to share with you the beautiful story of one of our friends and former employee, Donna Killoughey Bird and honor the memory of Gary, her husband.

Gary was the only person from Arizona to die in the World Trade Center on 9/11. I sat down with Donna this week to ask her about the book and her story. I was so moved by her witness of the grace in her life and the healing she’s received. Her story is one of deep pain, but also of profound joy in the celebration of Gary’s life. I was touched by her willingness to share with me, and with all of you.

Friendship and Conversion: Just Jesus and Me

It was a Saturday night and I was completely alone. I had cash in my pocket and gas in my truck but I had no friends … anymore. The phone was not ringing. The silence was a deafening reminder to how “sad” my social life had become in a very short amount of time. This had never happened to me in my previous three years of high school. My senior year was supposed to be epic! Instead it was growing increasingly lonely and there was only one person to blame: Jesus.

"Do You Trust Me?"

LTLC: 5 Teen's Reflections

This week wasn’t the typical “retreat high” that comes from most retreats and conferences. Instead, we focused on our intimate relationships with Christ and what He has called us to as we move forward in the world. It’s not about feeling good. It’s not about being comfortable. It’s about forming a concrete relationship with the Lord who so longs to be with you.

5 Ways to Get Spiritually Fit This Summer

One of my favorite things to do is workout. Whether at a gym, running outside, or doing P90X in my home, I love getting my body into shape. (Now, if only I could work on my eating habits a little bit). For me there’s just something about the discipline it takes, the feeling I get at the end, and the little results I can see that show me that I am getting healthier.

Epic Quotes from JP2: Falling in Love with Jesus Christ

“Let yourselves be charmed by Christ, the Infinite who appeared among you in visible and imitable form. Let yourselves be attracted by his example, which has changed the history of the world and directed it toward an exhilarating goal. Let yourselves be loved by the love of the Holy Spirit, who wishes to turn you away from worldly things to begin in you the life of the new self, created in God’s way in righteousness and true holiness (cf. Eph 4:24). Fall in love with Jesus Christ, to live his very Read more [...]

Epic Quotes from JP2: Seeking Happiness

“It is Jesus that you seek when you dream of happiness; he is waiting for you when nothing else you find satisfies you; he is the beauty to which you are so attracted; it is he who provokes you with that thirst for fullness that will not let you settle for compromise; it is he who urges you to shed the masks of a false life; it is he who reads in your hearts your most genuine choices, the choices that others try to stifle. It is Jesus who stirs in you the desire to do something great with your Read more [...]

I'm a Teenager Now. Does Praying Still Work?

Remember the days when praying used to mean asking God for a “unicorn that’s so fluffy” or for “no more tests ever.” Once I asked God for wings … I’m still waiting. God can do absolutely anything for us and He loves when we ask. But prayer isn’t just about testing Him. Prayer has to be about our friendship with Him.

A Plan for Your Lent

Here we are, on Fat Tuesday – and if you’re like me, you’re scrambling to decide what exactly you’re giving up for the next 40 days. A Glorious Morn: Light and Advent

Do you remember the first week after Daylight Savings Time ended? (You know, except if you live in Arizona.) Suddenly the sun seemed to disappear around 5:00 in the evening; a few days into Standard Time and 9:00pm suddenly felt like midnight. For me, I kept wondering where the day went. Before I made it home from work, it was already dark.

The closer we get to winter, the shorter the days and longer the nights get. There seem to be so few hours of light outside to play, practice sports, or hang with friends. When you wake up in the morning, the sun may still be rising, and before you head home from school the sun is already setting.

You Said It: The Example of St. Maria Goretti

(Editor’s Note: At the beginning of the month, I asked for contributions to the site from you – teens. Each time we ask and you answer, we’ll put some of the articles up in a feature we’re calling ‘You Said It.’ The first piece is by Jacqueline E from TX.)

A question that teens usually ponder regarding sex is, “How far is too far?” But a new question I challenge us to consider is, “How far would you go to protect your purity?”
