Where Have You Been?

2013-03_LT-Rihanna

We, like the Samaritan woman, continually ask God, “Where have you been?” or “Where were you?” when relationships or life don’t go the way we planned.

The thing is God never asks us, “Where have you been” because He knows where we’ve been. He knows the websites, the parties, the rooms we have entered, and the bottles we have opened to satisfy our thirst. He knows the relationships we have been in and the lines we have crossed emotionally, physically, and sexually. And yet, He sits at the wall of the well waiting for us to discover Him and accept His mercy and love.

Hello Spring Break . . . Goodbye Dignity?

2013-03_LT-SpringBreak

Life is stressful, right? Between school and work and relationships, it can be exhausting, and Spring Break is the perfect way to blow off some steam and finally relax. And over the next few weeks, countless teens and young adults will make very, very poor decisions – some that they won’t remember, and some they won’t be able to forget, because they’ll regret them for the rest of their lives – all in the name of freedom.

Marijuana: Is It Okay to Light Up?

2012-12_LT-Weed

All you have to do is listen to a lot of popular music to hear about marijuana. All you you have to do is watch TV or movies to see marijuana. And just attend a concert if you want to stand around inhaling it secondhand. It’s everywhere. Marijuana is even legal in a couple states and even where it’s not – I know you still see it. It’s a topic that always seems to spark a ton of debate. Is it a sin? Can it be used in moderation, etc? I want to take a step back from the legality Read more [...]

An Open Letter to My Sisters This Halloween

2012-10_LT-LEtterSisters

It takes you from the powerful, inspiring, and awesome person that you are to a mere object of lust. You are already beautiful and deserve better than that. When you show cleavage and your legs with mini costumes, it is those parts of your body that are emphasized (by design). It sends the message that the most valuable thing about you is the body parts you’re putting on display.

To Party or Not to Party: The "Good Influence" Argument

2012-09_LT-PartyorNot

Not going to the party makes a much bolder statement. It doesn’t mean you’re judgmental. It doesn’t mean you’re anti-fun or anti-friend. It means you’re pro-God. You might think people won’t notice or won’t care, but you’re wrong. No, the entire school might not take notice but some people will. Your courageous example to step away might be exactly what others need to see to do the same. There are others who, if given another option, would rather not be at the party.

Thinking About Drinking?: The Bible, Alcohol, and You

2012-09_LT-ThinkingDrinking

I talk to teenagers just about every day, and the conversations are often the same. They deal with the Bible and what the Church teaches and how challenging it can be to live a holy life in an unholy culture. I’d say that most teens that I talk to are truly looking for the Lord; some, however, are looking less for the Lord and more for the “loopholes.” For instance: “I heard that the Bible doesn’t say drinking alcohol is a sin.”

“Well, no, the Bible does not say that drinking alcohol is a sin,” I respond. I then go on to explain that it does become sinful (very easily), if any of the following happen…

YOLO: You Only Live Once

2012-06_LT-YOLO

If you’re on the interweb, you’ve seen #YOLO unfold in a series of tweets or status updates of shenanigans involving late nights, red bull, and impulsive hair dye. I don’t find the choices in these updates all that inspiring.

When I think of life-changing choices that inspire, I think of my friends Cathleen, Mark, JD and Kate.

Cathleen, Father Mark, Kate and JD made decisions based not on the idea that you only live once, but that their lives are eternal and their actions have eternal consequences for themselves and those they encounter. To put aside the luxuries, rewards or the “easy path” on earth may seem crazy or ill-advised, but following Christ has always been about faith in Christ’s promise that “whoever loses his life for my sake will find it” (Matthew 16:25).

What Memories Will You Make at Prom and Graduation?

2012-05_LT-PromGraduation

In choosing what you do to commemorate these final days of school, whether after graduation, prom or band practice, at the forefront of our mind and hearts should be this reality that all is a gift from God, to be used for His glory. This doesn’t require walking around yelling, “hallelujah,” but it demands that our actions be a reflection of who we belong to. We are not our own.

Epic Quotes from JP2: Fantasy Worlds of Alcohol, Drugs, and Shortlived Sexual Relationships

“Some of you may be tempted to take flight from responsibility: in the fantasy worlds of alcohol and drugs, in shortlived sexual relationships without commitment to marriage and family, in indifference, in cynicism and even in violence. Put yourselves on guard against the fraud of a world that wants to exploit or misdirect your energetic and powerful search for happiness and meaning. But do not avoid the search for the true answers to the questions that confront you. Do not be afraid!” – John Paul Read more [...]

Help for Hypocrites

I know it is difficult to be someone who goes to church. When you decide to take your faith seriously, you immediately become a role model. People expect more of you, and your are left wondering how to deal with the sin that roars inside. I admit that sometimes it is easier for me to act holy because it’s too painful and embarrassing to talk about the real struggles of my life.

Four Ways to Make Prom Awesome

As a homeschooler, my prom experience wasn’t exactly the kind of thing you see in the movies. Instead of a giant museum hall filled with balloons, streamers, and an amazing DJ, I had a boombox and some microwave taquitos. Okay, that might be an overstatement. Honestly, I didn’t go to prom – which makes it weird that I’d be writing about it for all of you guys getting ready for it. So to fill in my gaps in prom knowledge, I asked around the Life Teen staff to come up with some tips Read more [...]
