Life Matters: God’s Final Word on the Subject

There are few evils in this world that tear me apart like abortion does.

I’ve prayed with women who were contemplating it; some didn’t do it, others did. I’ve held crying women in my arms for hours, days, and even years after they have had an abortion. There are no words I can find to describe the pain that an abortion causes – to the mother, the father, the baby, or the Lord.

Many people try to make abortion strictly a political battle. Others attempt to make it a scientific debate. Still others reduce it to a subjective argument in which “no one person” is right or wrong – that it’s all about “what’s right for you.” None of these give the full picture, and all fail to take into account God’s objective truth.

God’s truth is this: abortion is murder. No more word games. No more semantics. God is life and abortion brings death. Abortion is in direct conflict with God, the gospel, and Christianity as a whole.

There’s so much I want to say, but I know that the Lord’s words are more powerful and more effective than anything I could ever come up with. Here are a few verses to help you help others understand that life begins at conception.

Every facet of a child is designed by God with incredible care.

“You formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother’s womb. I praise you, so wonderfully you made me; wonderful are your works! My very self you knew; my bones were not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, fashioned as in the depths of the earth. Your eyes foresaw my actions; in your book all are written down; my days were shaped, before one came to be.” – Psalm 139:13-16

God knows everything about us, down to the most intimate, innumerable details.

“Even all the hairs of your head are counted.” – Matthew 10:30

God made us, we are His, not our own.

“Thus says the LORD who made you, your help, who formed you from the womb.” – Isaiah 44:2

God creates and forms every child with a vocation, a “plan.”

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you, a prophet to the nations I appointed you.” – Jeremiah 1:5

God’s plan for us to do good and to be holy.

“For we are his handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the good works that God has prepared in advance, that we should live in them.” – Ephesians 2:10

God is always thinking about us, we are always on His mind.

“See, upon the palms of my hands I have written your name.” – Isaiah 49:16

God’s will is life and His desire is for us to live.

“…because he did not dispatch me in the womb! Then my mother would have been my grave, her womb confining me forever.” – Jeremiah 20:17

Conception is a scientific fact, but wrapped in a celestial mystery, which is God.

“Just as you know not how the breath of life fashions the human frame in the mother’s womb, so you know not the work of God which he is accomplishing in the universe.” – Ecclesiastes 11:5

It was predicted and prophesied that people would mistreat babies.

“The fruit of the womb they shall not spare, nor shall they have eyes of pity for children.” – Isaiah 13:18

God speaks out for the rights of those unable to speak for themselves.

“Your strength is not in numbers… you are the God of the lowly, the helper of the oppressed, the supporter of the weak, the protector of the forsaken, the savior of those without hope.” – Judith 9:11

Regardless of wording, political agendas, or spin doctoring when it comes to abortion, there is a fact: abortion is homicide. Homicide is defined as: “a killing of one human being by another.” Homicide is murder. Murder is as grave a sin as one can commit.

Scripture reminds us:

“You shall not kill.” – Exodus 20:13

“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” – Romans 13:9

“But let no one among you be made to suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or as an intriguer.” – 1 Peter 4:15

“Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life remaining in him.” – 1 John 3:15

Pope St. John Paul II declared in 1995 that:

“Direct abortion, that is, abortion willed as an end or as a means, always constitutes a grave moral disorder, since it is the deliberate killing of an innocent human being. This doctrine – based upon the natural law and upon the written word of God – is transmitted by the Church’s tradition and taught by the Magisterium.

No circumstance, no purpose, no law whatsoever can ever make licit an act which is intrinsically illicit, since it is contrary to the law of God which is written in every human heart, knowable by reason itself, and proclaimed by the Church” (Evangelium Vitae 62).

Please pray for those who have had abortions, for those contemplating abortion, and those to whom they listen. Pray that the world will see the truth of what abortion is, and begin to focus more on the “other” than on the self – that is the foundation of Christianity.
