Keep the Heat On

So I know I’ve mentioned this before, but I was in Mass this Sunday and I was a little frustrated. I go to one of a few different parishes each week, and this one was proving to be distracting. The music was hard to sing, I drifted off during the homily, and no one seemed to be participating. As the priest stood at the foot of the altar, waiting for the procession of gifts, I was in my own little mental world – focused on everything that I thought was going wrong. Then, thankfully, I had a chance Read more [...]

Grabbing the Spotlight

It seems like everywhere you turn lately, people are getting thrown into the spotlight for things that aren’t very flattering. From the genuine frustration of a tennis star to the [possibly] staged interruptions of a rapper, celebrities are grabbing our attention. And while there are already far too many blogs written about how stars should behave, I want to turn that light on us. Follow me on this – we so often hold up the overwhelmingly bad examples of the people in the world who are famous Read more [...]

Pedal Hard

If you’re just starting college this semester, or even just another year of high school, you know one truth: life is hard. Homework, family, jobs… there’s a lot going on in our lives. And in the middle of all that we’re also supposed to be this holy shining example of Christ, right? Sometimes it can all seem like too much. The other week, I talked to a friend who was getting back into school. Summer ended, classes were beginning, and he still had to get a lot of stuff done for work. Overwhelmed Read more [...]

The New Missal

There’s a new Missal coming out. Not like the kind of missile that supervillians try to shoot into space – a new Roman Missal, which is basically the instruction book for the Mass. Starting sometime next year, the USCCB (the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) will implement a new translation of what we say and hear at Mass. Maybe it’s just because I’m a Church nerd, but I’m unbelievably excited about this. All the changes are available to look at online (http://www.usccb.org/romanmissal), Read more [...]

Ghana – Part Four

(This continues Greg’s blog about his mission trip to Koforidua, Ghana. Read parts one, two, and three for some backstory on the trip.) So. Africa. Two weeks, thousands of miles, and no running water; what was it that I learned while I was there? That’s the question I seem to be getting more than any other. I learned that God is alive, that He truly is the Savior of the World. That no matter how far we go, we are made in His image and likeness. We experience the same joys and sorrows, we Read more [...]

Ghana – Part One

Wow – what a few weeks it’s been. Four days ago, I woke up in the atrium of the Atlanta airport after a few hours of sleeping on concrete. Five days ago, I woke up in Koforidua – a city in Ghana, Africa. My trip back to the United States was about… 36 hours long. But during all that time on planes, in taxicabs, and underneath rows of chairs, I had time to reflect on my experience of mission. During the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing different aspects of my trip, and what God showed me 6,000 Read more [...]

Ghana – Part Two

(This continues Greg’s blog about his mission trip to Koforidua, Ghana. Read Part One for some backstory on the trip.) Let me tell you, if you think you’ve been on a long plane ride – go to Africa. Ten hours sitting in a plane is quite the experience. Because I had things to do back in Mesa, I was meeting up with the rest of the mission team in JFK airport. I figured, ‘there’s plenty of time to get to know them on the flight.’ After boarding, I got the guy sitting next to me to switch Read more [...]

Ghana – Part Three

(This continues Greg’s blog about his mission trip to Koforidua, Ghana. Read Parts One and Two for some backstory on the trip.) As we began to settle into life in Ghana, we met more and more young Catholics who were passionate about Christ. The house we were staying at, the Otoo’s, also had some Ghanian young adults staying for the summer to serve in ministry. As the week progressed, I got to know two of the guys a little. Padua and Collins are both college students, studying computer science Read more [...]

God Rocked My Summer – What Now?

For me, summertime has always been God’s time. I can still remember seven years ago, when God and I had a summer to remember. In two back to back weeks, I went to the Life Teen Leadership conference at Notre Dame and Steubenville West in Tucson. My head was spinning from all the talks, prayer experiences, and new friends. I rememebered that I felt like a whole new world have been opened up to me – that my crew of high school buddies weren’t the only kids who loved Jesus in the world. Each day, Read more [...]
