Inception - Catholic Movie Reviews Podcast

CatholicMovieReviews

There are a lot of people – Catholic and secular – who are trying to turn Inception into some sort of philosophical storytelling opus, as if its messages were meant to be unfolded and discussed for generations. I beg to differ. The reason some people didn’t “get” the film is because there’s not some immense secret to get.

Inception could very possibly be the movie of the year, and it’s flat out owned the summer season. It’s a must-see, as rare as those movies are… but trying to mine it for a message on reality is like saying Terminator 2 was really a dissertation on the evils of technology. Instead, Inception is what action movies should be: a smart, well-acted story in an arrestingly beautiful and immersive world that keeps you locked in from the opening shot to the end credits.

A Catholic Reading List: Juniors

I’m going to warn you right up front: Junior year is a time to put the pedal to the metal. High school’s halfway over and the life beyond these four years is starting to creep in. A new job, a spot on the varsity team, AP classes… throw in the start of college applications and ACTs and it might seem like there’s no time for your faith life.

Not true. Actually, junior year is one of the best times to grow in faith and to make it something personal; it’s a chance to put what’s been learned into action. So that’s why this list is tougher than the others (you’ll have to check out the others and see if you agree with me).

A Catholic Reading List: Sophomores

Sophomore year! Freshman blues are far behind, drivers’ licenses are just around the corner, and we’re finally getting the hang of this whole “high school” thing… at least, that was my sophomore experience.

I put together a list of books that I’d recommend a sophomore to read, and you’ll notice they’re all pretty different. That’s intentional, because as you make the transition from ‘just out of middle school’ to ‘young person,’ you might find that there’s a certain part of our faith that’s most exciting to you.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World - Catholic Movie Reviews Podcast

CatholicMovieReviews

“The movie’s like a videogame come to life: baddies turn into coins when they’re defeated, an invisible announcer starts and ends fights, and everything moves with the speed and action of a comic book. But there are some issues with Scott Pilgrim and his fight against the world, particularly with sexuality. With that being said, ‘Scott Pilgrim VS The World’ still has less skin than a Katy Perry video… a three and a half minute Katy Perry video. It’s a fun and original film that’s incredibly aware of its audience – nerds.”

The Other Guys - Catholic Movie Reviews Podcast

CatholicMovieReviews

A lot of the movie runs like a bad Saturday Night Live sketch, where each scene tries to draw out one ridiculous joke over and over and then just cuts to the next scene without any sort of resolution. And although the obscenity’s probably enough on its own to make this a skippable movie, when you add in the spastic plot and odd storytelling choices, it’s squarely in the column of stuff you don’t need to see.

Archbishop Carlson Lays Down the Hammer on "Pro-choice Catholicism."

A few weeks ago, St. Louis Archbishop Robert Carlson published a letter regarding the Fifth Commandment (that’s the ‘Thou Shalt Not Kill’ one). He talked about a lot of life issues, but the biggest among them was abortion (emphasis added):

People who are casual about the sin of abortion and who choose to view it as a political issue rather than the serious moral issue that it is are guilty of violating the Fifth Commandment. You cannot be “pro-choice” (pro-abortion) and remain a Catholic in good standing.
