My Life in a Foster Family: An Interview with Matt Smith

Family is a word that can a lot of different things, and when the crew of LifeTeen.com sat down to look at the theme of “Family,” we realized that even working in the same office, we all come from different types of families. Our Director of Internet Ministry and first-round draft pick out of Georgia Tech Matt Smith came from a family that has a pretty unique story. I turned around the chair at my desk, looked over to Matt, and interviewed him about what it was like in the Smith family.

Advent: Waiting (for right NOW).

It’s a good thing I go to Mass, because that seems to be where God always tells me what blog about. And the question that’s weighed on my heart so far this week is this: “Am I eagerly awaiting Christ?”

Cool It - Catholic Movie Reviews Podcast

CatholicMovieReviews

We don’t usually tackle documentaries here on the podcast, but one came up that I just couldn’t skip over. It’s called “Cool It,” and it explores the ideas of a guy named Bjorn Lomborg. Lomborg is a scientist and environmentalist who has some pretty controversial views on global warming and climate change, and what it will take for us to actually fix them.

Megamind - Catholic Movie Reviews Podcast

CatholicMovieReviews

This week’s movie is Megamind, where Will Ferrell puts on the cape of a super-smart megavillain who finally succeeds in defeating his heroic nemesis, Metro Man… and has to deal with the consequences of having no one to stop his bad-ness.

And guess what? It might be Dreamworks’ best movie yet.

From The Editor's Desk: We Are Family

I have a huge family… seriously, it’s gigantic. We could rent out a floor of a hotel if we needed one for our family reunions. Just counting my cousins alone could field an entire football team. We are a big family. This month on LifeTeen.com is all about family – from the people in your house to the worldwide Church.

2.02 – Pregnancy, Pressure, and Purity

On The Mix, we try to bring you a little bit of everything (which is why it’s called ‘The Mix’), and this week it’s something extra special. Over the summer, blogger Christina Mead put together an audio story about the pressure teens face about sexuality, and the culture that’s taken teen moms and turned them into celebrities.

It's Kind Of A Funny Story - Catholic Movie Reviews Podcast

CatholicMovieReviews

What’s most striking about the film is that it feels genuine; there’s real heart in Craig’s search to find stability and happiness. He’s not that much different than the audience – and that’s what makes this kinda-funny story so relatable.

From the Editor's Desk: Saint-stravaganza!

Saints – what do you think of when you see the word? You might think of your Confirmation saint or the saint your parish is named after. Maybe your family has a certain saint they’re devoted to, or you’ve looked into which one you’re named after.

That’s what we’ll be diving into this month on LifeTeen.com – Saints. From stories of their lives to answering the weirdest questions (“What’s up with incorruptibility?”), this’ll be a month all about our sacred superheroes.

The Social Network - Catholic Movie Reviews Podcast

CatholicMovieReviews

If I were an old person who didn’t know anything about youth in America, I’d say “The Social Network” is inaccessible to anyone with a short attention span. But I know you guys better than that, and that some of you have been starving for the kinds of movies smart people watch and smarter people make – even when the story’s as simple as one man’s broken friendships.

Easy A - Catholic Movie Reviews Podcast

CatholicMovieReviews

As far as “high school” movies go, ‘Easy A’ has the best female lead since Juno, and maybe the smartest script since ‘Mean Girls’ – problem is, the antagonist’s just a cheapshot at a false Christianity.

Easy A is rated PG-13 for mature thematic elements involving teen sexuality, language and some drug material.

To Save A Life - Catholic Movie Reviews Podcast

CatholicMovieReviews

“…it’s pretty clear about fifteen minutes in that the movie’s going to follow the story arc of a Christian drama. Not like ‘TNT Knows Drama’ drama, but the kind you see onstage at a youth conference. Movies that are ‘Christian’ a lot of times stay on the safe side – but To Save A Life gets closer to reality than most as it deals with teen suicide, teen pregnancy, and even cutting. It’s a little long and a little predictable, but as far as church movies go, it’s not half bad.”

From The Editor's Desk: What You See Is What You Get

This is the official announcement of our September 2010 theme for LifeTeen.com content

Whether it’s in the headlines of Hollywood or the chambers of Congress, it seems that scandal’s everywhere these days. Celebrities, politicians, leaders… everyone is ready to prove that what they say and what they do aren’t the same things. But the stars of newspapers and gossip websites aren’t the only ones whose talk doesn’t match their walk. We all know how easy it can be to be ‘Catholic’ on Sundays. Hanging out with our ‘church’ friends and sitting in Mass, we can seem like the perfect Catholic.

Molokai: The Story of Father Damien - Catholic Movie Reviews Podcast

CatholicMovieReviews

…sometimes we get the idea that saints are these spiritual superstars, but the story of Father Damien shows an ordinary man answering the call to extraordinary holiness. He was a young priest who did what God asked him to do, and the movie gets that across. David Wenham as Damien continually impresses as a man who you can’t help but look up to.
